  1. Man, I hate to say this - but web design/development is a bit complicated. There really isn't an 'easy' way to do things like this. My advice to you is to either learn (X)HTML and/or CSS from the ground up, so that you have a firm understanding of how to code your visual ideas - or just tell your parents that web design is a professional trade, and suggest they hire someone to make the changes.I don't mean to come down on you at all - please do not hear that - I'm just trying to give you advice. When I started out, I came here all the time - asking similar questions to yours. This is probably the best resource for help that you can possibly find anywhere - I suggest you stick around and learn more.Try doing the tutorials on http://www.w3schools.com/ for HTML, XHTML, and CSS. If you need help, either hit up these forums - or pm me and ask me my email address, I'll help you out man.If you really don't care about the coding at all, and you just want to use some kind of WYSIWYG editor to get the visual look that you want, I have 'LOTS' of expensive software - so if you want to, I'll just make the changes for you and get the files to you - for free. The rounded corners that you want should be a breeze in DreamWeaver.This community got me through my first freelance web design job (when I thought I knew enough to do it all myself), and saved my butt big time - I'll do the same for you. Here's the thing though, I started to realize how much I 'didn't' know once I took some jobs, so I took a break and studied. I have had my nose in the JavaScript Bible, the PHP5 and MySQL Bible, and a book about professional web design using XHTML and CSS. To cover the graphical side of things, I looked into tutorials for Macromedial Fireworks, Flash, and DreamWeaver. I know for a fact that the next job I take, I will be more than able to complete with minimal help (or if not, we've always got these forums).Good luck with your endeavors - if you need some quick help in a jam, pm me for my email address.Cordially,LifeInBinary.
  2. Thank you so much boen_robot. So should 'background:inherit' fix those problems, or will I pretty much have to mess with everything until the validator is happy (which I suppose doesn't matter)?It would just be nice if when someone goes to validate a website I made, all that comes up is 'VALID' - not 'WARNING' - I dunno, just particular I guess.Thanks for the help though,LifeInBinary.
  3. I got 4 'warnings' - not errors. Does that mean that my CSS technically validates?Here is my CSS: body {font-family: arial; color: #000066}a:link { color: #000066; text-decoration: none; }a:visited { color: #000066; text-decoration: none; }a:active { color: #000066; text-decoration: none; }a:hover { color: #F4D928; text-decoration: none; }.info_left {color: #ffffff; font-size: 80%; text-align: left}.info_right {color: #ffffff; font-size: 80%; text-align: right}.nav {background: url(images/nav_bg.jpg); text-align: center}.motto {background: url(images/motto.jpg); text-align: center; font-style: italic; font-weight: bold; font-size: 105%}.certified {background: url(images/certified.jpg); text-align: center; font-style: italic; font-weight: bold; font-size: 80%}.bg {background: #000066}.bg_content { background: url(images/content_text.jpg); background-repeat: no-repeat; background-attachment: fixed }.bg_content_box_1 { background: url(images/content_box_1_text.jpg); background-repeat: no-repeat; background-attachment: fixed }.bg_content_box_2 { background: url(images/content_box_2_text.jpg); background-repeat: no-repeat; background-attachment: fixed }.bg_content_box_3 { background: url(images/content_box_3_text.jpg); background-repeat: no-repeat; background-attachment: fixed }.bg_content_header {background: url(images/content_header.jpg); text-align: center; font-size: 120%}.bg_content_box_header {background: url(images/content_box_header.jpg); text-align: center; font-size: 120%} And here is what the validator had to say:Warnings (4)URI : file://localhost/TextArea1 Same colors for color and background-color in two contexts .bg and body 2 Same colors for color and background-color in two contexts .bg and a:link 3 Same colors for color and background-color in two contexts .bg and a:visited 4 Same colors for color and background-color in two contexts .bg and a:active Should I even worry about these, or do I need to fix them? If so, how do I fix them? I have no idea.Thanks for the help,LifeInBinary.
  4. Thanks guys, but I figured it out on my own.Thanks,LifeInBinary.
  5. Here is another problem that I have run into. I know about nesting tables for layouts being a bad idea, but it's how I did this one - and it needs to validate.Here is the code: <!DOCTYPE htmlPUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN""http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd"><html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"><head><title>McKeon & Associates LTC</title><meta name="robots" content="index" /><meta name="author" content="James C. 6. Awesome. Thank you, that worked out fine. It validates now. I assumed that since I was using the 'iframe' attribute, that the DOCTYPE should be Frameset.Thanks,LifeInBinary.
  7. THIS TOPIC HAS BEEN RESOLVED.I only have 3 errors, but I can't even figure out what the validator is talking about.Can somebody please help me figure out how to get this to validate?Here is the code: <!DOCTYPE htmlPUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Frameset//EN""http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-frameset.dtd"><html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"><head><title>McKeon & Associates LTC</title><meta name="robots" content="index" /><meta name="author" content="James C. This could mean that you have incorrectly nested elements -- such as a "style" element in the "body" section instead of inside "head" -- or two elements that overlap (which is not allowed). One common cause for this error is the use of XHTML syntax in HTML documents. Due to HTML's rules of implicitly closed elements, this error can create cascading effects. For instance, using XHTML's "self-closing" tags for "meta" and "link" in the "head" section of a HTML document may cause the parser to infer the end of the "head" section and the beginning of the "body" section (where "link" and "meta" are not allowed; hence the reported error). ----------Error Line 24 column 17: there is no attribute "background". <td background="images/content_header.jpg" colspan="2" width="660" height="30"You have used the attribute named above in your document, but the document type you are using does not support that attribute for this element. This error is often caused by incorrect use of the "Strict" document type with a document that uses frames (e.g. you must use the "Transitional" document type to get the "target" attribute), or by using vendor proprietary extensions such as "marginheight" (this is usually fixed by using CSS to achieve the desired effect instead). This error may also result if the element itself is not supported in the document type you are using, as an undefined element will have no supported attributes; in this case, see the element-undefined error message for further information. How to fix: check the spelling and case of the element and attribute, (Remember XHTML is all lower-case) and/or check that they are both allowed in the chosen document type, and/or use CSS instead of this attribute. If you received this error when using the <embed> element to incorporate flash media in a Web page, see the FAQ item on valid flash. ----------Error Line 38 column 6: end tag for "html" which is not finished.</html>Most likely, You nested tags and closed them in the wrong order. I will probably be needing help with other individual pages on this website, so if you guys could check back - that would be awesome. Step one is to figure this page out, then I will be able to fix most of the other ones - but I might still be needing help As always, thanks guys - you're all a really big help,LifeInBinary.
  8. Wow, thanks for your interest guys.I am asking the client to be more specific about what he wants in a forum - so when I know, you'll know. Keep posted.Note: The client is not 100% sure he is even ready to pay for a website. If he backs out, then I won't need your help. However, I would still be interested in learning how to incorporate forums in the future - and I wouldn't be able to pay anyone, but I would still be interested in learning how to do it personally.Again, I'll let you know where he stands.Thanks guys,LifeInBinary.P.S. - If anyone wants to email me about what they would charge to help on this project, or just helping me with forums personally for free - my email address is jaywilliams2005@yahoo.com - Thanks.
  9. Hey guys,It's been a while since I was on here. I am taking a new client, but he wants a forum. I am fine with the rest of the site, but I have NO experience with forums at all. I would hate to not take the job just because of the forum. Would anybody be willing to help me get a forum up and running if I pay them?@ moderators: I don't know if this is allowed here or not. If it's not, my bad and I'm sorry - feel free to lock it. If it is, any help?Thanks as always,LifeInBinary.
  10. Yeah, that's what I normally do - it's how I code all my other stuff. I use graphics for the images, then notepad for real HTML :)I was just wondering if it looked good.Thanks though,LifeInBinary.
  11. Could someone please copy and paste this into a new .html document and view it in a browser?I tried to get everything to span 600 pixels wide - but as you will see, the bottom table has a gap in it. I think the bottom one is the one that truly is 600 pixels wide - so why is the rest not? Can anybody point out the error in my code for me please? <html><head><script type="text/javascript">function setfocus() { document.hours_log.day.focus();}</script></head><body onLoad="setfocus()" bgcolor="#dddddd"><br><br><br><br><br><center><form name="hours_log" action="mailto:myemailaddress@yahoo.com" method="post" enctype="text/plain"><table border="1" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0"><tr> <td> <table border="0" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0" bgcolor="#ffffff"> <tr> <td bgcolor="#eeeeee" width="600" colspan="5"><b>LOG HOURS FORM</b></td> </tr> <tr> <td width="600" height="10" colspan="5"></td> </tr> <tr> <td bgcolor="#eeeeee" colspan="2" width="200"><u><b>Date (dd/mm/yy):</b></u></td> <td width="200"></td> <td bgcolor="#eeeeee" colspan="2" width="200"><u><b>Type of Hours:</b></u></td> </tr> <tr> <td bgcolor="#eeeeee" width="200" height="10" colspan="2"></td> <td width="200" height="10"></td> <td bgcolor="#eeeeee" width="200" height="10" colspan="2"></td> </tr> <tr> <td bgcolor="#eeeeee">Day:</td> <td bgcolor="#eeeeee" align="right"><input type="text" name="day" size="1" maxlength="2"> </td> <td width="200"></td> <td bgcolor="#eeeeee">Consultation</td> <td bgcolor="#eeeeee" align="right"><input type="radio" name="hour_type" value="consultation"> </td> </tr> <tr> <td bgcolor="#eeeeee">Month:</td> <td bgcolor="#eeeeee" align="right"><input type="text" name="month" size="1" maxlength="2"> </td> <td width="200"></td> <td bgcolor="#eeeeee">Design</td> <td bgcolor="#eeeeee" align="right"><input type="radio" name="hour_type" value="design"> </td> </tr> <tr> <td bgcolor="#eeeeee">Year:</td> <td bgcolor="#eeeeee" align="right"><input type="text" name="year" size="1" maxlength="2"> </td> <td width="200"></td> <td bgcolor="#eeeeee">Coding</td> <td bgcolor="#eeeeee" align="right"><input type="radio" name="hour_type" value="coding"> </td> </tr> <tr> <td width="600" height="10" colspan="5"></td> </tr> <tr> <td bgcolor="#eeeeee" colspan="2" width="200"><u><b>Amount of Time:</b></u></td> <td width="200"></td> <td bgcolor="#eeeeee" colspan="2" width="200"><u><b>What was Done:</b></u></td> </tr> <tr> <td bgcolor="#eeeeee" width="200" height="10" colspan="2"></td> <td width="200" height="10"></td> <td bgcolor="#eeeeee" width="200" height="10" colspan="2"></td> </tr> <tr> <td bgcolor="#eeeeee">Hours:</td> <td bgcolor="#eeeeee" align="right"><input type="text" name="hours" size="1" maxlength="2"> </td> <td width="200"></td> <td bgcolor="#eeeeee" colspan="2" rowspan="3"><textarea rows="3" cols="22"></textarea></td> </tr> <tr> <td bgcolor="#eeeeee">Minutes:</td> <td bgcolor="#eeeeee" align="right"><input type="text" name="minutes" size="1" maxlength="2"> </td> <td width="200"></td> </tr> <tr> <td bgcolor="#eeeeee" width="200" height="10" colspan="2"></td> <td width="200" height="10"></td> </tr> <tr> <td width="600" height="10" colspan="5"></td> </tr> </table> <table border="0" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0"> <tr> <td bgcolor="#eeeeee" width="600" height="32"><center><input type="submit" value="Submit"> <input type="reset" value="Reset"></center></td> </tr> </table> </td></tr></table></form></center></body></html>
  12. Ah, so really if I have that div - then I can just not redirect them because it would be kind of pointless right? So I could just put my loading page content in the div - and once the images preload in their browser, then it will automatically show the original page?Thanks,LifeInBinary.
  13. Thank you so much for that - but just out of curiosity: Why do I need to put a loading message in a div (blue), if I'm bringing up a different .html file (red)?Thanks for the help,LifeInBinary.
  14. So could I set up an external .js file to preload the images? Would it look like this: var image1 = new Image();image1.src = "/images/image1.jpg";var image2 = new Image();image2.src = "/images/image2.jpg";var image3 = new Image();image3.src = "/images/image3.jpg";var image4 = new Image();image4.src = "/images/image4.jpg";var image5 = new Image();image5.src = "/images/image5.jpg"; Sorry, I don't know JavaScript yet - so if that's wrong, can someone edit it to be right and post it for me please?Also, I know i would call that .js file from the .html page that I am preloading - and I know how to do that.So could I call a second .js file that shows the preloading screen? Would it only contain this: funciton showImages(){ location.href = "/page2.html";} Would I then just add this to my HTML page: <body onload="showpage();">Could someone show me specifically (or explain in detail) how to set up my .html file, the .js file that actually preloads, and the .js file that shows the preloading screen?Also, how long does the preloading screen display - and can I change that? I would like to put a .gif animation of a loading bar on the preloading page and have it redirect to the actual page after the .gif animation finishes...Thanks for the help,LifeInBinary.
  15. I know I can Google for this, but can someone show me some actual code that I could preload images on my site with? Assume the images are named image1.jpg, image2.jpg, image3.jpg, etc... Also, would JavaScript be better to do this with?Secondly, is there a way that I could put the code to preload the images in my external CSS file under the class of body.preload and just put this in my body tag: <body class="preload">Let me put this out there too: the reason I want to do this is to get my loading time down... I have 392kb of images to load, and that would be crazy on dial-up. I have compressed the images to 76kb, but it still takes 8 seconds to load on dial-up. So I kind of want to preload them and display a separate HTML page while they preload - how would I do this?Also, any other suggestions to improve loading time would be very helpful...Thanks,LifeInBinary.
