  1. Please consider the following code and answer the question. Please do not omit your reasons for answering as you did. CODE SYNOPSIS: This handy piece of code places a constraint on the number of words that can be placed in a selected <textarea> element. In addition, it displays the current status of the selected element as one enters text. This code, less the iterative aspect, has been tested for one <textarea> element, but I wish now to expand it to include many <textarea> elements. In order to do this I created a mixed associative array (see below) whose data I use to select each <textarea> element and apply a different constraint. Although I have identified each <textarea> element by its unique id='' attribute I have used the class='' attribute to display the current status of the selected <textarea> element. My motivation for doing this latter is, of course, one of efficiency. My belief is that specific overrides general, and that the values generated by the id='' attribute will override those designated by the class='' attribute -- a designation that is common to all <textarea> elements. QUESTION: Is this sound Javascript programming logic? Or, must I change the class='' attributes to the same id='' attribute for each <textarea> element? <?php foreach($wordmax as $textarea => $arr) { $area_id = $arr['id']; $max = $arr['length']; $($area_id).on('keydown', function(e) { var words = $.trim(this.value).length ? this.value.match(/\S+/g).length : 0; if (words <= $max) { $('.display_count').text(words); $('.words_remaining').text($max-words); }else{ if (e.which !== 8) e.preventDefault(); } }); } ?> <textarea id='letter_body' name='letter_body'>...</textarea><br /> Word Count: <span class='display_count'>0</span> Words Remaining: <span class='words_remaining'>0</span> <textarea id='letter_abstract' name='letter_abstract'>...</textarea><br /> Word Count: <span class='display_count'>0</span> Words Remaining: <span class='words_remaining'>0</span> $wordmax = array( 'letter_abstract' => array ( 'id' => '#letter_abstract', 'length' => '150' ), 'letter_body' => array ( 'id' => '#letter_body', 'length' => '800' ), . . . 'student_bio' => array ( 'id' => '#student_bio', 'length' => '400' ), );
  2. My code doesnt work the way I want it. The goal is a gradient background. I made an external style sheet. Like this: .grad{ height: 1020px; width: 1900px; /* Permalink - use to edit and share this gradient: http://colorzilla.com/gradient-editor/#feffff+0,ddf1f9+35,a0d8ef+100;Blue+3D+%2318 */ background: #feffff; /* Old browsers */ background: -moz-linear-gradient(top, #feffff 0%, #ddf1f9 35%, #a0d8ef 100%); /* FF3.6-15 */ background: -webkit-linear-gradient(top, #feffff 0%,#ddf1f9 35%,#a0d8ef 100%); /* Chrome10-25,Safari5.1-6 */ background: linear-gradient(to bottom, #feffff 0%,#ddf1f9 35%,#a0d8ef 100%); /* W3C, IE10+, FF16+, Chrome26+, Opera12+, Safari7+ */ filter: progid:DXImageTransform.Microsoft.gradient( startColorstr='#feffff', endColorstr='#a0d8ef',GradientType=0 ); /* IE6-9 */ } .maincell { text-align: left; width: 1900px; } .topcell { horizontal-align: left; height: 100px; } .downcell { horizontal-align: left; height: 600px; } The html code <html> <head> <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="style3.css"> </head> <body class="grad"> <FRAMESET ROWS="15%,85%" frameBorder="0" border="0"> <FRAME SRC="carn_head.php" name="navigatie" scrolling="no"> <FRAME SRC="carn_bottom.html" bordercolor="#CBEDF1" name="main"> </FRAMESET> </body> </html> The error is that I get to see a gradient background but not the code put in the pages. It used to when I hadnt add the .grad class. How can I have a gradient background and over it a frame showing the pages intended in the frame src?
  3. I love what w3schools is doing with the SQL tutorial - good stuff. I noticed that one of the most fundamental elements of w3schools (the "Try it now" button) goes missing about half-way through the SQL Tutorial. May I ask why? I teach sql at a local community colleg. I have gone through several textbooks with mixed results, and I am always keeping my eyes open for new ways to teach. I would love to incorporate w3schools SQL tutorial into my class; do you have a db dump available for download of the tables you use? One of my lessons will be having students figuring out how to get the data from the tutorial into a local database, but having the entire dataset available up front would be handy. If such a db dump is not available, no worries - easy enough to generate one. Thanks again for your time and attention.
  4. I was wondering if javascript or jquery could change the look of a CSS class in a function called by a onclick(). For example I have a #first and also a .unclicked and .clicked. And i have a input type="button" id="first" class="unclicked" onclick="function()". function(){ change class from unclicked to clicked on first then some other code } Inside the function how do i change the class from unclicked to clicked. I know you haft to use the document.getid(first).style, but I'm not sure how to get the function to change it.

  6. Hello, I have a master div ID element which contains smaller class elements (boxes) which are currently set to float left. I would like these class elements to be centred within my master div and remain centred when the windowm scales. There also needs to be a space between the class elements (boxes) and there are two class elements positioned next to each other. My master div ID element which encapsulates the smaller classes has the following CSS #master { border: none; width: 100%; height:auto; margin-top: 0; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 0; margin-left: auto; overflow: hidden; } I tried to text-align: centre but it didn't centre the class elements, rather just the text within the boxes (class divs). The class elements which I want to centre have the following CSS: .profilebox{ border: 1px solid #FFCC99; height: auto; width: 390px; float: left; margin-top: 14px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: 20px; border-radius: 5px; overflow: hidden;/*this togther with the height auto ensures this parent div encapsulates all child divs*/ } I tried to remove float: left and set margin right and left to auto but then then instead of having two of these boxes side by side, I had just one (and the other moved underneath). Many thanks for reading this post:)
  7. In trying to make a "talkbubble" styled div- box change colors completely upon being clicked, I ran into a problem of getting the :before pseudo element that I'm using (to shape the arrow for the talkbubble) to actually change colors with the rest of the element. My script is http://jsfiddle.net/petiteco24601/3xuuq2fx/. When I couldn't get it to work, I did some research and it seems what/how to control pseudo-elements is a question that most web developers seem shaky about. For the most part, a lot of what I found was basically saying that there's no way to really force javascript on a pseudo element, since the pseudo element doesn't REALLY exist. However, with more research, I found things like http://css-tricks.com/pseudo-element-animationstransitions-bug-fixed-in-webkit/ andhttp://stackoverflow.com/questions/2610497/change-an-inputs-html5-placeholder-color-with-css/2610741#2610741 that say that those bugs were fixed and it is possible with some browsers to use javascript on pseudo elements. What's the actual deal? How extensively can a person control pseudo elements?
  8. I have created a calendar for my golf league and wish to color code the days that we play with a specific color and other events different colors. We play on a thursday so I would like to color code all thurdays "green" My question is, what would be the best and most professional way to do this? Would creating an external css file and giving each Thursday the same ID or class name? Would a Class designation be better? Would the following coding example be appropriate? Any help would be greatly appreciated Thank you CSS file: .thursday { bgcolor: green; } HTML file: <td class = "thursday">.......

  10. Hello Internet. Back for another question. I am using CSS styling to make an image larger during a hover event. I have made the code work for IE but Safari does not like it. Actually what Safari is doing is once you click on the image it will show the original image AND the hover image together and separated. The desired effect is that once you hover over an image it will increase the image size. Please help... Here is my CSS code:.thumbnail{position: relative;}/*CSS for enlarged image*/.thumbnail span{position: relative;padding: 0px; left:0px; border: 0px solid #000000;visibility: hidden; color: black; text-decoration: none;}/*CSS for enlarged image*/.thumbnail span img{border-width: 1px solid #000000;padding: 0px;}/*CSS for enlarged image on hover*//*position where enlarged image should offset horizontally */.thumbnail:hover span{visibility: visible;top: -64px;left: -5px;} /*CSS to place DIV around the original image so it does not disturb the rest of my page*/.enlrg{ width:60px; height:70px; border: 1px solid #ffffff; float: left; margin-left: 0px;} Here is my HTML Code:<div id="enlarge" class="enlrg"><a class="thumbnail" href="http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/team/_/id/97/louisville-cardinals" target="_blank"><img src="lvillelogo1.jpg" width="50" height="38" style="float: left; margin-left: 13px; margin-top: 20px;"><span><img src="lvillelogo1.jpg" width="60" height="44" style="float: left; margin-left: 13px; margin-top: 20px;"></span></a></div><div id="enlarge" class="enlrg"><a class="thumbnail" href="http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/team/_/id/2483/oregon-ducks" target="_blank"><img src="oregonlogo1.jpg" width="50" height="38" style="float: left; margin-left: 9px; margin-top: 20px;"/><span><img src="oregonlogo1.jpg" width="60" height="44" style="float: left; margin-left: 9px; margin-top: 20px;"></span></a></div>
  11. This question is specific to named CSS selectors. There is probably an obvious answer to this question, so I apologize ahead of time. If I wanted to apply a property to a bunch elements I would use a class; could I also use an id to give individual properties to any of those elements? Basically, can a single element have a class and an id? Can there be multiple classes? If so, is this proper html to do it this way, for all the main doctypes?I'm just confused, because I don't think I've ever seen any examples whilst learning, in which an element has a class and an id. Are there any other methods for selecting name elements with CSS (that are compatible with all main browsers), other than "class", "id", and "title"? Any help would be appreciated.
  12. Hellooo.. :DCould you please tell me the difference between id and class?I think that it is the same..Take a look ! Using ID : <!DOCTYPE html><html><head><style>#center{text-align:center;}</style></head> <body><h1 id="center">Center-aligned heading</h1><p id="center">Center-aligned paragraph.</p> </body></html> Using Class : <!DOCTYPE html><html><head><style>.center{text-align:center;}</style></head> <body><h1 class="center">Center-aligned heading</h1><p class="center">Center-aligned paragraph.</p> </body></html> I see there's no difference, but in w3schools.com,It says that The id SelectorThe id selector is used to specify a style for a single, unique element.The id selector uses the id attribute of the HTML element, and is defined with a "#". The class SelectorThe class selector is used to specify a style for a group of elements. Unlike the id selector, the class selector is most often used on several elements.This allows you to set a particular style for many HTML elements with the same class.The class selector uses the HTML class attribute, and is defined with a "." But, i think the id selector can also be for a group of elements.. Please explain this !
  13. Hey, everyone.. :DI want to ask something about classes..Can you tell me the difference between p class, span class, and other classes?Thx before
  14. I have 2 questions. First one is most important! I attach the php, and the css files here for you (Hello dsonesuk ) to look and maybe help me with this. I may know how to do this, but then i might need to change it all and do it all from a a beginning again. So i would like a fast change advise for this problem. Anyway here it goes: I have the class called "sidboxes" wich are located to the right of the container(browser). And in that class 3 classes - the classes are called sidbox1, 2, and 3 for each of the 3 boxes. So i have now as you can see in the css an position:absolute. When i minimize the window here at the workplace i am, it moves around 5-10 mm. But when i am at home at the laptop this whole class move about 10 cm into the middle! I tried(not at home though but here where i am now on a different computer.) to write relative instead(as i think it actually must be relative!) but then this whole class moves down and makes a big space below everything. Now the images are not attached but i think you know how to help anyway . The boxes are supposed to be at the same place AS they are when having the absolute tag, BUT not move around when minimizing a window. As neither absolute seems to be the right tag to use, i need help now, cause i tried with relative both outside and inside the container i have. 2 question: What can i do to remove that empty space at the bottom wich is about 2-3 cm???? (the last cssfile attached is for the menyboxes to the left. I think the empty space got to do with them....) index52.php pse52.css pse5menyset2.css
  15. <?phpclass test { private $messages = array(); public function addMessage($message){ $this->message[] = $message; } public function getMessages(){ return $this->messages; } } class test2 extends test{ public function getMessages(){ $this->addMessage("Last message."); return parent::getMessages(); }} $test2 = new test2();$test2->addMessage("Hello World");print_r($test2->getMessages()); In my world of understanding this should return an array with 2 entries but I get an empty array back, anyone know what's wrong? What the code does is what class test2 overwrites getMessages and adds a message and calls back to the parent method to do the original script of the function. odd is this work: class test2 extends test{ public function getMessages(){ $this->addMessage("Last message."); return $this->messages; }}
  16. Hey All, I'm jumping back into some web design to update personal site (I usually do camera and computer effects so this is always liking diving back into a 12-foot pool at first).I was wondering how to script a jQuery selector so that it would select all other elements in the document that matched that specific class of the object that was clicked. The purpose is to click on a little mini-thumbnail in a slide that would bring up a "gallery widget" with the appropriate photo enlarged and its respective thumbnail in the widget highlighted, rather than just uploading the first in the set. The elements being selected are in an entirely different div/list so they can't be considered children.Do I need to use a variable? If so how (terrible with that part)?All help is greatly appreciated. Thanks! Jared Also, this wont be an issue with other classes being attached, will it?
  17. <html><head><style type="text/css">#customers{font-family:"Trebuchet MS", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;width:100%;border-collapse:collapse;}#customers td, #customers th{font-size:1em;border:1px solid #98bf21;padding:3px 7px 2px 7px;}#customers th{font-size:1.1em;text-align:left;padding-top:5px;padding-bottom:4px;background-color:#A7C942;color:#ffffff;}#customers tr.alt td{color:#000000;background-color:#EAF2D3;}</style></head><body><table id="customers"><tr> <th>Company</th> <th>Contact</th> <th>Country</th></tr><tr><td>Alfreds Futterkiste</td><td>Maria Anders</td><td>Germany</td></tr><tr class="alt"><td>Berglunds snabbköp</td><td>Christina Berglund</td><td>Sweden</td></tr><tr><td>Centro comercial Moctezuma</td><td>Francisco Chang</td><td>Mexico</td></tr><tr class="alt"><td>Ernst Handel</td><td>Roland Mendel</td><td>Austria</td></tr><tr><td>Island Trading</td><td>Helen Bennett</td><td>UK</td></tr><tr class="alt"><td>Königlich Essen</td><td>Philip Cramer</td><td>Germany</td></tr><tr><td>Laughing Bacchus Winecellars</td><td>Yoshi Tannamuri</td><td>Canada</td></tr><tr class="alt"><td>Magazzini Alimentari Riuniti</td><td>Giovanni Rovelli</td><td>Italy</td></tr><tr><td>North/South</td><td>Simon Crowther</td><td>UK</td></tr><tr class="alt"><td>Paris spécialités</td><td>Marie Bertrand</td><td>France</td></tr></table></body></html> nowConfusion 1) <table id="customers"> will the id=customers inherit the properties of all the above #customers defined in the style. Confusion 2)I referred the class and id selector tutorial for css here http://www.w3schools.com/css/css_id_class.asp and also referred the above example code there seems some contradiction between tutorial and example(taken from http://www.w3schools.com/css/tryit.asp?filename=trycss_table_fancy) The Contradiction which I feel is when we use id selector we give(eg:- #customers) we don't any extra text but in the above example (#customers td, #customers th) and moreover (#customers tr.alt td) but in the tutorials there are no details given regarding that we can use class and id can be used in same line confusion 3) (#customers tr.alt td) this line of text in the above example seems alien?I would be very much thankful if someone can take the pain to clarify my confusion?
  18. I have been using Positioning and Float to set up a banner. I want to have a fixed height banner (starting at the top of the page) and for this to have: an image located on the left; a background (generated from an img); and a single line of text aligned to the right of it and at the bottom. The html has a div with an id. This div contains the img and that has a class which floats it to the left. This div also contains the text, which is aligned to the right. The external CSS style sheet details the id, which repeats a background img to fill the browser window [repeat-x (doesn't seem to matter if I specify left/right/center)], and the class which floats the image [img.floatLeft], Main Problem: It works, but I can't figure out how to get the line of text, which is happily sitting on the right, to be at the bottom of the div. Isn't align deprecated? I'm confused. Secondary Issue; I read about the CSS background-position Property. I would like to fix the banner at the top of the page independent of scrolling, But I can't make it work with the repeated background image. I also noticed that the size of the image used for the repeat is changed when the div is fixed. I'm viewing it in FF 9.0.1. Thanks in advance.for any help / suggestions
  19. Could someone take a look at the below code, and tell me why "<p class="rentalFleetText">" is inheriting a different CSS class. To be specific I think it's inheriting ".bottomRight p"?Being new to HMTL and CSS, my best guess is that I'm only allowed to have one font class per cell, or something weird, but honestly I have no idea.HTML: <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd"><html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"><head><meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8" /><title>Sarasota-Tampa Express Homepage</title><link href="all.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" /><script type="text/javascript">function MM_swapImgRestore() { //v3.0 var i,x,a=document.MM_sr; for(i=0;a&&i<a.length&&(x=a[i])&&x.oSrc;i++) x.src=x.oSrc;}function MM_preloadImages() { //v3.0 var d=document; if(d.images){ if(!d.MM_p) d.MM_p=new Array(); var i,j=d.MM_p.length,a=MM_preloadImages.arguments; for(i=0; i<a.length; i++) if (a[i].indexOf("#")!=0){ d.MM_p[j]=new Image; d.MM_p[j++].src=a[i];}}}function MM_findObj(n, d) { //v4.01 var p,i,x; if(!d) d=document; if((p=n.indexOf("?"))>0&&parent.frames.length) { d=parent.frames[n.substring(p+1)].document; n=n.substring(0,p);} if(!(x=d[n])&&d.all) x=d.all[n]; for (i=0;!x&&i<d.forms.length;i++) x=d.forms[i][n]; for(i=0;!x&&d.layers&&i<d.layers.length;i++) x=MM_findObj(n,d.layers[i].document); if(!x && d.getElementById) x=d.getElementById(n); return x;}function MM_swapImage() { //v3.0 var i,j=0,x,a=MM_swapImage.arguments; document.MM_sr=new Array; for(i=0;i<(a.length-2);i+=3) if ((x=MM_findObj(a[i]))!=null){document.MM_sr[j++]=x; if(!x.oSrc) x.oSrc=x.src; x.src=a[i+2];}}</script></head><body id="theHeader" onload="MM_preloadImages('images/homeActive.png','images/about-usActive.png','images/route-and-scheduleActive.png','images/flight-informationActive.png','images/fareActive.png')" ><table id="headerTable" border="0" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0"> <tr> <td id="logoBox"> <img src="images/Sarasota-Tampa-Express-Logo.png" width="205" height="75" alt="Logo" /></td> <td> <div id="rightsideHeader"> <p id="tagLine">We make things convenient for you! <span id="phoneNumber">Call Today! 20. OK, so a question mainly about the use of the id class and if something would be proper use or a bad practice as far as coding goes. In an attempt to streamline stuff even further I have been recoding my site and I have been thinking about adding an id tag to the body of some pages. This would of course allow me to set custom css for those specific pages.Examples:<body id="creatures"><body id="core-classes">etc, etc.. Or would it be more proper to just create an extra <div> with the id tags--or a class tag-- inside of the main content div for that section and go that way.Examples: (article being the primary container for that section with all the positioning/etc data for the container)<div id="articles"> <div id="creatures"> --insert content entry here-- </div></div> OR <div id="articles"> <div class="creatures"> --insert content entry here-- </div></div> I've read a few things on it and some seem to be for it and some against it but the articles I've found are fairly old so need some fresh thoughts on it.

Hello all,I have a problem for 3 days now and simply don't know what to do; google did not help.Basically I have to create a table on a website for upcoming events, some of which link to pages where people buy their tickets.I have assigned a class, ex1, to those links to style them in css.Works flawlessly in crome and in ff, as well as IE8 in compatibility mode, but not in IE8 which is the largest chunk of users and thus very important.The website is the following: *edited out, as it no longer exists*I understand that I have used mainly inline styles and yes I know external stylesheets are more useful, but as the url might give away, this is for me to see whether I can actually implement what is asked of me. The design is based on a printed sheet which students can hang on their walls, thus it is important for it to look like this.If you view the site in FF/GC you'll see the effect working, in IE8 however it displays the style of a:link, but actually does not link anymore, let alone hover/active. Interestingly enough, when tabbing through, a:focus works, as well as a:active and on pressing enter I get redirected as planned. This doesn't make sense to me and I have only found the common issue of IE8 ignoring empty anchors, which is not the case.Any help would be so, so, so much appreciated!!
  22. I just find my self thinking about how php reads arguments in a call, reason for this is what I just got stuck in call_user_func_array(). I'm calling the construct method in one class from this function with some arguments. The problem I face now is that I call the construct method 2 times which is not wanted. $params = array('arg1', 'arg2', 'arg3'); <?phpcall_user_func_array(array(new $_GET['class'], '__construct'), $params);?> This would be great if it worked like the one above but this just sends an array as argument. <?phpnew $_GET['class']($params);?> Any suggestions how to solve this?
