A bit confused

I'm a bit confused here. I understand the purpose of xml files, and how to write simple xml files. What I don't seem to get is when you are grabbing information from an xml file does that file stand alone or is that file included in a database. Here's where I get lost. If infact I need to add my xml file to a database then the whole xml situation seems useless?

adding xml to a database is not necessarily useless.I've seen folks put XML content into a field inthe database just to store a bunch of information that they didn't want to waste extra fields in the database with - that would be on reason why XML could be stored in a DB.

And to answer the other question- No. The information is not included in a database or anything, unless you instruct it to. It's only captured directly, the same way the information from an SQL database is captured and handled directly.
