I was just going along on another forum and came upon a topic of how big earth is compared to other things. Someone posted this link:http://atinyglimpse.ytmnd.com/I wish I could see all the text, but its still amazing. I want the picture of those galaxies!!! Tell me what you think of it. I hope this is the right place!

That's funny, before I clicked the link I thought I would reply with a link to the Hubble Deep Field image. The first thing I thought when I saw it was that that image is the HDF image. But, it turns out, there have now been 3 deep field images. I was aware of the original, from 1995, I remember seeing that one in National Geographic. You can see that one here:http://hubblesite.org/newscenter/newsdesk/...leases/1996/01/Then, 2 years later, Hubble took another deep field, this time in the southern sky. This is the Hubble Deep Field South: http://hubblesite.org/newscenter/newsdesk/...leases/1998/41/It took a little digging, but the image they were using there is the newer Hubble Ultra Deep Field:http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap040309.htmlhttp://hubblesite.org/newscenter/newsdesk/...leases/2004/07/There are a few discrepancies in the animation though. The exposure time was not 4 months, apparently it was 1 million seconds, which, if my math is right, is about 11 and a half days. Apparently, 800 exposures where required to make the image, requiring 400 Earth orbits of the satellite between Sept. 24, 2003 and Jan. 16, 2004. Also, not every object in the image is a galaxy, there are several stars in our own galaxy. But they are easy to spot, they are the balls with difraction spikes shooting out of them. Also, there is a 6200x6200 resolution version of the image available from here if you really want detail:http://hubblesite.org/newscenter/newsdesk/...07/image/a+warnHoly crap, and check out the SWEEPS field image:http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap061013.htmlGo download the 24MB full-resolution version and see how many stars you can count!http://hubblesite.org/newscenter/newsdesk/...2006/34/image/h

That's very cool... 10,000 galaxies... all with possible planet systems revolving around their own Suns most likely and we still don't believe that there might or is life out there.. hmmmm
What do you mean 'we'?There are definately signs of intelligent life on other planets:
An unusual spot has been found on Mars that scientists believe is not natural in origin. The spot appears mobile and is now hypothesized to be a robot created by an intelligent species alien to Mars.
http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap061009.htmlIt's a really cool satellite that took that image, it can resolve objects 1 meter large from orbit and entered the orbit of Mars about 2 weeks ago. And, there's even a website where you can request places to image. And here is the same location from the ground:http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap061002.htmlAnd this image is amazing, it is what Earth looks like from Mars. On the top is Earth and our moon, and on the bottom is Jupiter and a couple of its moons:http://www.space.com/php/multimedia/imaged...r_030522_02.jpgAnd this is what we look like from Saturn:http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap060927.htmlAnd a historical picture, the first picture ever of Earth taken from the surface of another planet:http://www.cybercityradio.com/earth-from-mars.htm

I mean "we" as the human race not any one person in particular. As for signs of intelligence or other life on Mars. Till if and when we send astronauts or robots to retrieve whatever it is they see on that planet we will never know for sure what anything is that we see.

I would tend to disagree, I think that only certain religious groups maintain that we are the only life in the universe, I think that most other people don't think that way.Actually, what they photographed is our robot. Or, one of them at least. One robot photographing another one. The rover has a twin elsewhere on the planet as well. That's the point of the rovers being there - so we can verify what we think we are seeing, and study the geology.

I have to disagree in thinking only religious groups think there is no life out there. I'm sure there are non religious people also. Probably 60% of the population think there is some form of life out there but 40% would think otherwise and not all can be religious or religious groups... I believe there is life out there myself...

For those interested in other life forms I would recommend reading something written by Erich vön Daniken a greatness in this field thanks to who the PLATEO-SETI theory came to life. The should have copies of his most famous book in every library I think the English version of it is called "Chariots of the Gods" one of the best books I ever read on this subject. Actually it was the one that gave me my interest for this subject, I read about 100 books on the subject only becouse of that one.Ruud Hermans

I hate space it scares me to think about it.
Yeah, it's pretty crazy. If you look at one of the images I posted, everything that mankind has ever personally seen, done, produced, experienced, etc for all time is all contained within those few pixels near the top of the image, except for a few select people and a few chunks of metal hurling through space somewhere. Considering that, it's pretty crazy to see how much black is in that picture. Not only that, but you can just browse around the high-res version of the Hubble Ultra Deep Field image and look at all of the different galaxies. Those galaxies are so amazingly far away that no one or nothing produced on this planet, other then radiation, will ever reach them. And not only that, but there is more information and knowledge contained in every single one of those galaxies then we can ever imagine. And to us, they are a few colorful pixels on an image, taken of a part of the sky that looks black. Things like Star Wars could be going on in each and every one of them (in a galaxy far, far, away..), and we will never have any knowledge of it other then images like that. And what's more, the light that is producing those images is so old that a lot of the galaxies we see in that image are probably destroyed or dying by now, and there are new ones in their place that we won't even see for several billion years.I think that it's reasons like these that cause people to suddenly have a brain hemorrage. Like Lewis Black said, do NOT think about that for more then 2 minutes or blood will shoot out your nose!

That is very impressive, but why don't they spend more time looking at our earth and its vast oceans, because some of the things that we are finding out about the oceans is amazing. It would take much less time to seach everyinch of our oceans if we didn't spend all of the money on research into space.Have you ever watched the whole Blue Planet series, it is amazing.

Have you thought about expansion? Earth is pretty much going to die soon, ALOT sooner than projected, which was supposed to be about 5 billion more years, but with humans on this planet, no.. I dont think so! We need to find a way to expand, and there is much more knowledge to be found about space that can help us alot!

That's not entirely true. Earth isn't going anywhere. People, on the other hand, I'm not so sure about. We are alive for the first time in history when humans have the ability to destroy themselves.. so far, the results aren't very comforting. But this probably isn't the place to discuss geopolitics. We've survived through a lot, but I'm curious to see if we can survive us. Screw the Earth, save the humans! That aside, I think space exploration is a great investment. Other then the purely explorational and scientific motivations, there are the side-effect benefits that come from investing billions in technology. For God's sake man, if it wasn't for the space program, we wouldn't have velcro! Or fuel cells, for that matter. Or a few other things. If it weren't for the space program, I very much doubt that we would be sitting at personal computers communicating over a worldwide network. A lot of the solutions to problems that present themselves when you explore space (i.e., communicating with and operating a robot on another planet) include technology that finds a very wide use in everyday life. There are a lot of cool things going on in the ocean, and I love to scuba dive, but that's not a reason to avoid space exploration.

Given knowledge of the Hubble Deep Field Photos, and the fact that there are trillions of galaxies containing hundreds of trillions of stars in the universe and many of them have their own planet systems, its almost mindboggling that some people today still believe that Earth is the center of the universe and the only place with life. As if the other billions of lightyears of space outside of the earth are completely sterile...

That's what I was trying to say with religion. Since the Bible says that God created Earth, and created man in his own image, the early church taught that he created only Earth and only man (apparently, they didn't extend his having created 'the heavens' to mean every other planet and species that may be out there). So, a lot of people still believe that. But it's a good thing you're here Yahweh, did you create life on other planets? People want to know!

That is not accurate. The Bible teaches that God created the heavens and the earth. I am not sure where but it also talks about 3 "heavens" when refereing to creation, 1st heaven: the sky where birds fly, 2nd heaven: the atmoshpere, 3rd heaven: space.Perhaps you are speaking of other religions besides Chrisitanity or very narrow sects of Christianity. I would argue that the general belief is what I explained.I would fall into the category of "very religious" to most but I would argue that I am not and that religion is just a worthless man-made tradition and has nothing to do with knowing God...but that is another issue.

I'm a little worried about introducing religion into this off topic discussion. I don't see a problem continuing it, lets just distance ourselves from that aspect of the universe and its discussion.Having said that, I've always been laughed at whenever I've suggested that a galaxy is nothing more than an atom. So we, as people, are just a bundle of galaxies walking amongst a bunch of other bundles of galaxies. Hows that for a rediculous theory?

Oh no, I am not saying that we should forget Space exploration all together, Sapce is great, I just think that if we learnt what is on our planet first, then started to go outside and beyond. I mean their are maybe even two other ecosystems in the oceans that don't evolve around the sun at all, right in the bottom of great vast crevices on the sea bed.Really the Blue Planet is an awsome series!
