Browser Discussion

We, the mods, have decided to keep all browser discussion in one thread.
I'm developing this site which will have a couple different logins. These logins will belong to a certain group or province I should say. So for example, the province of Ontario (canada) will login using their login and should only be able to see their documents (webpage, excel, word, powerpoint...) same goes for other provinces and groups. A group or province should not be able to access another ones files. The problem I have with this is if someone knows the url of the excel spreadsheet, what's stopping that person to type it in and open a file that he's not supposed to have access to? So is there a way I can protect these files from being opened just by putting the url in? I am kinda limited with web server settings, is there something I can do with ColdFusion?

Some questions are even extremely similar, but yet people ask the same questions all over again.

That "please-read-the-tutorial-first" message pinned at every forum apparently DOES NOT work.

I firmly believe that this forum is created to answer questions that the w3schools main website does not answer.

I do not have a solution for this.
APPML has been officially DISCONTINUED! ;-(

I got a reply to my question about where the AppML docs went and was told Appml was being discontinued! I politely pressed the issue hoping the docs could at least be made available but the quote below was the terse response. <sigh> If you use it i would highly encourage posting here and emailing them to atleast make available the code and docs for a 3rd party to continue to support.

Are there any obligations they have since the software was released under the GNU public license? Anyone want to take up the mission to allow AppML to be used by others? if so, I am willing to assist. I am deeply disappointed this has been discontinued and in particular with no apparent notice or anything, the AppML content is simply 404.

QUOTE

Hello

I am sorry.
Any fast way to do this?

I had a collection of recipes that I stored in the Microsoft Word format for some time and then thought that storing them in XHTML format would save loads of space (at that time, I had floppies).

So I tried converting some of them and it was only 2-3kb per recipe instead of 20-30kb. What a huge amount of space saved!

Now that I read about XML, I think that it is appropriate for me to store my recipes in XML format instead of XHTML. The problem is I have a whole lot of XHTML files and I want to convert them to XML fast.

I still have a few Microsoft Word documents that I plan to convert to XML manually, but is there a way to XMLize the XHTML documents in a fast manner. I'm guessing not because XHTML elements are defined, but XML elements are made up, then defined in the DTD, Schema, or whatever.

I'm guessing if it is possible, I will use XML DOM.

Hey Folks,

After going through all 11 pages in this forum (yeah, slow lazy day) and not finding this suggestion, I could have missed it though I suppose, I thought what the heck at the very least someone will get a chuckle out of my suggestion.

Since there is so much PAIN and AGONY in the browser world of compatibility why not come up with a "Browser Validator", you know something like the W3.org has for HTML, CSS, and the like; only it would validate the code for each browser type (a validator tool for each browser type)

I'm not sure how plausible something like this would be, I suppose since each browser manufactures has their own way of doing things that the validator would have to be authored by them; in which case getting them to agree on something like this could be just as easy as getting them to agree on one standard format.

Anyway just a thought, but if this is already available then "PLEASE" point me there.

Peace,
Elemental

I would just like to bring to attention an error that I found on the w3schools HTML guide. If there is some way that I can report errors (the right way) please bring it to my attention, because the w3schools website did not...

On the "HTML Forms and Input" page of the HTML guide, near the bottom of the page before the "more examples" there is the coding for a submit button that is WRONG.
W3S Forum Potential: Wasted.

Always, when I'm surfing this forum's discussions I have to say myself: "Damn, this forum potential is really wasted!". And this is what I think.
I really like this forum friendly and -at the same time- serious atmosphere. Here we have a lot of experienced programmers, web designers, webmasters, etc. Why is this forum so *leaved to itself*? We know, admins haven't free time to follow this forum. Ok.. then, why don't gave this forum to a new admin who have time and passion to manage it? For example, I'm not a good programmer, web designer/developer.. but I'm a *good* webmaster. I could pay for a vBulletin copy (I think it's the best software out of here) and then host all this forum's experts. I will manage it and take it more nice and active than this one. I know you should think something like "What the ###### he's saying!?", but you should take in mind that mine is just an example/suggestion. I repeat, just and example/suggestion.

Ok, nothing else to say.. maybe one last thing: excuse me for my bad english. I doing my best.

Regards,
Norman

This script relies on what I have found to be a typical habit and that is to simply name all your images the same name but adding a number on the end.
// - change "27" to reflect the highest number assigned to your files. Since this is javascript, you must have a zero(0) image defined since that is where javascript begins to count image0.gif, image1.gif, image2.gif . . .
    random_num = (Math.round(Math.random()*27));
    // example of a n image this would find is: http://www.yourdomain.com/_random/theme_fall_12.gif
    document.write("
");
//-->

SHOW/HIDE SCRIPT

CODE

&lt!--
// author: (as noted in script)
// description: Part I - show/hide javascript
// necessary mods: none
// use source: http://www.iribbit.net/i/_files/toggle.js
-->

CODE

&lt!--
// author: (as noted in script)
// co-author: skemcin
// description: Part II - show/hide HTML code
// necessary mods: change each of teh respective grp1, grp2, grp3, etc. values as needed - the link needs to be the same value as the div you want it to control. You can have multiple links control one div, just use the same ID in the link definition.
Where is ColdFusion Going?

I've only seen 2 websites that use coldfusion, some random game, and of course the adobe website (wonder why!). I dont see a reason to add a language that isnt exactly going anywehre, thats like saying add Basic or Pascal on there. (Not trying to flame, just point out something)

I welcome these statements as they are unquestionably based on personal opinion and very little, if any, fact.

FACT: In use at 75 of the Fortune 100 companies and at more than 10,000 other companies worldwide, ColdFusion MX is one of the most widely adopted web technologies in the industry.

First, here is a short list of ColdFusion sites:
75 of the Fortune 100
Cold Fusion Showcase
Ben Forta's Library of CF Sites
Government Agencies
Non-Profits

How about Yahoo Web-based Instant Messenger, based off of Flex 2 technology:
http://www.onflex.org/ted/2007/05/yahoo-we...with-flex-2.php

Second, I can sum it up in three words - power, flexibility, and speed. Learn more here:
http://www.digital-crew.com/index.cfm/page/whycoldfusi

The latest release, due out real soon, has a slew of features that no other language supports - including RSS built-in conversions, .NET integration, MS Exchange Server interaction, server side Presentation (Adobe Breez, power point like) creation on the fly, server side pdf and pdf form generation and manipulation, built in AJAX and JSON functionality, and the list goes on.

re: http://coldfusion.sys-con.com/read/364573.htm

In fact, now, if ever before, is the best time to get to know ColdFusion. There is no application programming language that is easier to learn, use, and integrate.

Here is one more to read:
http://coldfusion.meetup.com/17/messages/b...?thread=2995449

I can go on for days, but I'd like to see what evidence you are basing your statement off of?

Hello,

i have created a simple cfquery which is

------------------------------------------------
<cfquery name="tmax" datasource="xxxxxx">
SELECT thermaxRange.productName, thermaxRange.productIMG, thermaxLabelRange.range
FROM thermaxRange
LEFT JOIN thermaxLabelRange
ON thermaxRange.thermaxID = thermaxLabelRange.thermaxID
</cfquery>
------------------------------------------------

and basicly what it does is it pulls data from one table, data such as the products name, product image, etc. And then it pulls more data from another table, this data being specific to each product.

when i use the cfoutput tags like this

------------------------------------------
<cfoutput query="tmax">

#productName#

see products
#range#
</cfoutput>
------------------------------------------

it repeats the products from one table which is good. But when it comes to displaying the data from another table, it seems to repeat the same product in accordance to the data in the second table.

you can have a look here and see what i mean click me

what you are looking at is the first product being repeated several times . This product should have ABCD next to it only ,not to have it displayed as it is doing so.

example of how it should be displayed

3 level <--- Both of these are pulled from the first table
product image
ABCD <---this is pulled from the second table

and then so on for each of the products.

i dont know why its displaying it like that.

any help would be nice.

cheers
Darren

I have seen some Invision Power Boards with reputation systems, and I like it.

Couldn't we have one too, to let posters add a special thank to their helpers in the form of a reputation point with comment? It would be nice, its not necessary. But with it we can view the best coders, nicest coders, or best helpers or whatever you name it. Besides, with these special thanks, the helpers on our forum can recieve a bit of extra energy to help even more

However, I want to display pop-up titles when your mouse hovers over each image. I have followed the instructions here and I still cannot get it to work. In fact, I have tried other ways of altering the plugin (linked pictures, etc.) and they still do not work. Any help you can give me is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

(X)HTML FAQ

If you have a solution to a common HTML or XHTML problem, you can PM me. Please provide the problem and solution with a reference to the website where you found this (if applicable).

HOW DO I

Make a Guestbook in HTML?

Make a Forum in HTML?

Make a Blog in HTML?

Send emails from a form in HTML?

The short answer is, you can't. Basically, any site where you want the visitor/client/user to be able to interact with something on the website, you need what is called Serverside Technologies, that is a Programming Language that executes commands and processes the input from the visitor/client/user, and a Database of some sort that the Programming Language can use as storage space. Look under "Server Scripting" and ".NET (dotnet)" for some popular Programming Languages. Some more that (as of now) are not covered by w3schools include Cold Fusion (CF) and Java Server Pages (JSP) to name a few.

TUTORIALS

http://w3schools.com/html/default.asp
http://w3schools.com/xhtml/default.asp

NOVICE

Incorrect Nesting of Elements
Elements in HTML cannot overlap each other. The following is invalid:
Incorrect nesting

In this example, the B element is intended to contain an I element. To be truly contained within the B element, the I element's end tag must occur before the B element's end tag. The following is valid:
Correct nesting

Using all lowercase letters in a DOCTYPE
In a DOCTYPE, the formal public identifier--the quoted string that appears after the PUBLIC keyword--is case sensitive. A common error is to use the following:

Here the formal public identifier (FPI) is all lowercase. The validator does not recognize the document as HTML 4.0 Transitional since the expected FPI for HTML 4.0 Transitional uses different case:

Missing a required sub-element of HEAD
If you receive the error "Missing a required sub-element of HEAD", check that you have included the TITLE element in the HEAD. The TITLE element is required in all HTML documents.

Uppercase letters in XHTML tags
In XHTML, unlike HTML, element and attribute names must be all lowercase. For example, onMouseOver is an invalid attribute in XHTML, which requires use of onmouseover instead. Either is fine in HTML.

Email form to yourself
You'll need to define the action attribute in your form element. Like so

It is recommended to use server-side scripting languages such as asp, php, coldfusion... to handle a form. This way the user which submits your form won't need to have a mailing application on his computer and you have more power over the data that is sent to you.

Linking within a document
Links that link within a document work almost the same way as external links using the tag. However, there is an extra step involved. With these types of links you have to create the link and the target.

This is how you link to a specific section in a document.
section 1

When you are linking in the same document where the section is you may remove the url in front of the #.
section 1

Here is how you set the section, this is where the link will go to.

INTERMEDIATE

Validation Problems with ASCII Characters
One of the requirements of XHTML-Strict validation is to code certain characters in ASCII syntax. Below is a list of characters and the ASCII equivalents that must be used to achieve proper validation.
& = &
< = <
> = >
...

Closing /
When coding in XHTML you are required to close all non-closing elements with a / at the end.
HTML:
XHTML:

Here is a list of non closing elements: br, hr, img, input, link, meta and script (optional).

Attribute Minimization
Incorrect: READ-ONLY
Correct: READ-ONLY

Same goes for selected, should be selected="selected".

Deprecated Elements
Older HTML tags and attributes that have been superseded by other more functional or flexible alternatives (whether as HTML or as CSS) are declared as deprecated in HTML4 by the W3C - the consortium that sets the HTML standards. Browsers should continue to support deprecated tags and attributes, but eventually these tags are likely to become obsolete and so future support cannot be guaranteed.

<applet>, <basefont>,
, <dir>, , <isindex>, <menu>, <s>, <strike>,  and <xmp>.

ADVANCED

When to use IDs and Classes
Classes aren't always necessary! If every
element is going to have the same style, adding a class to every paragraph is redundant at best.
IDs should be unique on a page. Let me repeat that: don't reuse IDs! Remember that ID is an abbreviation for "identifier". Use IDs to target specific, individual elements.
Classes are meant to be reused. They work great for things like alternating background colors in table rows. (Give every second row a class="alt-bg", for example.)

When to use DIVs and SPANs

Overview
The primary difference between the and
tags is that doesn't do any formatting of it's own. The
tag acts includes a paragraph break, because it is defining a logical division in the document. The tag simply tells the browser to apply the style rules to whatever is within the .

DIV
The
tag defines logical divisions (defined) in your Web page. It acts a lot like a paragraph tag, but it divides the page up into larger sections.

also gives you the chance to define the style of whole sections of HTML. You could define a section of your page as a call out and give that section a different style from the surrounding text.

But that's not all it does! The
tag gives you the ability to name certain sections of your documents so that you can affect them with style sheets or Dynamic HTML.

One thing to keep in mind when using the
tag is that it breaks paragraphs. It acts as a paragraph end/beginning, and while you can have paragraphs within a
you can't have a
inside a paragraph.

SPAN
The tag has very similar properties to the
tag, in that it changes the style of the text it encloses. But without any style attributes, the tag won't change the enclosed items at all.

The primary difference between the and
tags is that doesn't do any formatting of it's own.
VBScript help: find/replace?

I'm not new to VBScript, just very bad at it.
W3schools Joint Projects

I had an idea of having (maybe twice or once a year) a HUUUUGE, joint project at W3Schools. I mean so that everyone had a part in it to do. So that there would be things for the very beginners and challenges for the pros. Maybe making a huge, complicated website??

This would be supervised by the administrators and moderators of this forum. They would assign each member a small piece to do within a deadline, and then collect it and place it on a free server. Then the administrator (or one of the moderators, whoever will be the Project Manager) will put all of these parts together and create a HUGe project. Maybe give some people jobs to make forms, polls, etc. Then others could write a css layout, others could do a database in MySQL. Someone could make an admin panel in ASP and JS etc etc etc. THERE ARE MANY IDEAS AND POSSIBILITIES!

I think that this would be a great idea, and I would appreciate any feedback on this matter.

Thanks

That simple.

Click here to try it

Basically it's this free IM chat room anyone can join in at any time. Not like one HUGE chat room, but a linked defined chat only for this site and anyone who visits it. No sign up/in or anything, just click the link and you're reading to start chatting. The thing I really like about this is that it works even if you are browsing these forums, meanwhile you can be chatting. I thought it was really neat. Yes you can have your own screen name.

I checked the "Gabbly" chat site... All seems to check out.

edit: if doesn't work the first time you click it, try it again.

Cool Tips:
- Chat window is resizable.
- Chat window can be docked to the bottom (Horizontially) or left (Vertically) side of your browser of the page you are viewing.
- Refresh to change your screen name color.
- Click on a screen name to "mute" or block that users messages.

Try it out folks.

Gobby

I recently found an application that would have had proven useful in the W3Schools project if anyone of us knew about it until then.

Ladies, I give you Gobby. And there's no spelling mistake with Gabby either.

It's an Instant Messanger. But not just any IM. It has one unique ability... it's what we've been dreaming for: Allowing each participant to edit a text file, which of course can be in any programming language. Special highlighing shows who edited the code. There's Syntax Highlighting for some popular languages. The best part is a group may even edit few files in a session and each member can save a copy any time.

I haven't tryed it yet, due to a lack of anyone to code with, but I saw screenshots and I read a review... all of that two days ago.

Merry cristmas and happy new year everybody. Enjoy!

Help with sorting TONS of data

Well I'm not going to post exact source code because it's proprietary and would open up security holes on my website, plus it's 6 or 7 files and tens of thousands of lines of code, so I'll just describe my problem

Basically what I have is a page where it lists a table of people, and various pieces of data (city/state/name/id/whatever...). There are different layouts that display different data, and you can filter and sort by just about everything displayed on every layout.

The way it works is a large SQL query is built depending on what needs to be displayed/filtered/sorted.

After that huge query is built it is passed onto a custom tag, which executes the query, and then loops through the result set to display the data.

Now normally if I wanted to sort by something I would simply add an ORDER BY clause onto my query and then the already ordered result set would be sent to the custom tag and all would be well in the universe, however in one case, I can't do that.

The problem is with the person's "rank". The rank its self isn't explicitly stored in the database, only several criteria which are updated monthly, which are used to calculate the rank. No...I can not just add rank to the database, I don't care to explain it more than that, but I can't.

I can call a getRank() method on an ID to get the rank. btw the ranks are Strings like A, EA, BTL, STL, GTL, PTL.

So...

does anybody have any ideas on how I could sort by rank? I was thinking something along the lines of creating an array with ID/Rank in it, then sorting that, and then querying all the data somehow...

blah I'm burned out, help please
