Tired Of Looking For Hosting That I Neeed!

hi,

Ok, I've been with http://www.awardspace.com for a year now....
And i'm finding I want different hosting.

There is so much crap / generic reseller cluster stuff out there I dont know what to do about it.

I looked at powweb, bluehost , and alot more...

Here is what I want.. Maybe you can help. OH and i'm tired of the "unlimited" but when u check there is a limit. I dont mind a limit, i'd prefer to know the #'s instead of unlimited *at their discretion*.

Heres what I use..

I want to host multiple domains out of my account which I currently do.
I want to have the option of setting up a control panel for them. Possibly.
I cant quite do 25/month reseller hosting as I dont make enough from sites to do this.
I want MySQL databases to be big. I dont want small databases. Just incase. I will be hosting a forum site. It's not big yet and not done but who knows.

I just want something good. I dont mind paying over 100/year for it, and most of the websites I make are maintained by me so the customer has no need to login to an account. But If the option is there I would like it.

Any thoughts?
I could really use some pro help here.

Also I tried yahoo.com a long time ago and wow 40bucks CAD/3 months is rediculous for me.

Thanks guys
Duncan

Hi there,

I am nearing completion of the site I've been working on for a few months and I would really appreciate some feedback. I have just done the test integration of WorldPay and would particularly like feedback centered around the checkout process. I will list a test Maestro card to use (it's a British debit card) and an American Express one. Any feedback is good: if you don't like the style, or it isn't clear what to do/what you can do, or if anything doesn't work or looks crazy. Please tell me the browser name and version with any problems.

Many thanks!

AromaClear

Maestro card # 6759649826438453

American Express # 370000200000000

Obviously the domain doesn't tie in with the site name, but I have it earmarked and place-holdered ready for launch. Note that the terms and conditions are, so far, borrowed (for reference) from cd-wow.co.uk and will be changed in due course.

Ok, go!

Making A New Web (advices)

Hi guys!

Well, here's the thing. I want to start making a new web for me and my job.

I just want some advices.

Im electrician, and I want a web where theres info about me, phone numbre, what i do... bla bla bla. The most tricky think is that I want a page where the person can get an estimate of what they want to do. So I will add a DataBase with the things I do and estimated time to do it (eg: putting a plug on a wire, 5€ E, estimated time 10 mins, and so on). And when the customer made the selection, he clicks on "Submit" button and ready to show everything

It would be good that they click on "new plug", or "20 m wire", and those things autoadd to a square at the right, a column or something. Like a "virtual cart".

So that is what I want, I think u know what I mean.

Any advices on how I can make it? Not flash, and I want it to do load on any computer.

Ty guyss!

Defining New Paper Types

But you guys generally know everything, so I'll ask anyway

I am creating a variety of label mockups for products we want to sell and I have sheets of 30 labels of one size, 33 of another size, and 15 of another. Each time I finalize a design, I have to copy, paste and position the design onto my Photoshop layout grid for each label size. This is a pain if I want to change the design as I have to do the whole thing again. I have looked on for ways to define new paper types and haven't had much luck. I wondered if anyone had done this and could help me or point me to some decent resources. I'm using an HP Photosmart 8*** printer. In the same way that printing an A5 image twice with paper source set to A4 landscape will print them both on the same sheet, I want to define different paper sources for each label sheet so that printing one label 30 times will result in the an output that matches my label template (and 33 times and 15 for the other label sizes).

Muchos gracias to anyone who can help.

Database Access For Html And Other Language Parameters/attributes Etc...

Does W3Schools have a database I could query that would give me all the attributes for an HTML tag i.e.

select * from attributes where tag='anchor';

This would return a result of:

name
id
alt
href

etc....

so that once I determine which type of tag is most appropriate for my data, I can find out what attributes, event handlers etc... are available with that tag?

The idea being this DB would kept up by the appropriate standards body and as the spec changes the DB is kept up to date. Then I can create some code that would get the appropriate attributes or whatever and see if I have an appropriate value in my DB.

I'm guessing the DB already exists and is the backend for the w3schools pages, my question is, can I query the DB myself?

thanks

Hello there!!!

Now I am in the middle of the reading of your GREAT HTML Tutorial and I would like to report you about some uncleared articles in this tutorial.

At the "more examples" section at almost the bottom of the page, there are some uncleared and "undetailed" articles, as following:

1) you didn't specified as requierd how to make an image map that display the image coordinates, you only wrote the code who cause this action to be, but didn't specified how it is work.

2) Also, you didn't specified as required how to create an image with clickable areas, also here, you again wrote only the code who make this, but didn't specified at all, how the code generate this result.

3) and, at last, at the section of the "HTML formatting", all the different "computers tags" are seems exactly one and the same!!
except individuals of them like the <var> tag and <dfn> tag.

I hope you will fix the needs to be improved and notify me on the changes you have did.

Before ending I must emphasize that when I referred to W3schools mail at their Help section in their homepage, thet didn't response me at all!!!

Thank-you!

I just signed into the forum for the first time, and wanted to say, THANKS VERY MUCH for providing this great resource! I've actually been visiting the tutorial section pretty regularly for the last 4 months. I used to do web site development during the late 90's, then did other things for several years. After getting laid-off from my "day job" a few months ago, I've taken on a number of freelance web development gigs, and have been slowly building up a clientele.

Not only was I very "rusty" (i.e., out of practice) getting back into it, but also a lot of things have changed in the html/xhtml/css/php/... world since I did this before. (I used to do strictly table-based layouts before - this css stuff has really been a paradigm shift!) But thanks to comprehensive information provided on this site, it has not been all that difficult to adjust to the new protocols and practices. I love the little demo pages - really helps to play with the code without having to deal with the usual overhead.

I expect I'll be doing this for some time to come, so I plan to be around for a while. Thanks again!

Kate

How Tocheck The Web Page Coding

I am rather new at this, and I have a question about checking my code to be sure it is correct.

This is what I have been doing, and I would like to know if it is a good method or not.

I started off by coding a rather large test page, using as many of the examples as possible. I did not copy and paste. I wrote each individual tag. I inserted a dtd as follows:

QUOTE

<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC
"-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01//EN"

Then I saved it as an .html file.

I ran it and it appeared to be pretty good. I then changed the file to a .xhtml, and was shocked to find numerous error throughout the file. I individually corrected each error until I had a clean sheet.

So, is this a proper way, or does anyone have a suggestion, comment, maybe a snorting chuckle?

Questions About Google Analytics

Hi
I've set my company's site up with Google Analytics and have a couple questions.

My boss has been using Webalizer and AWStats as his analytics tools. These tools are counting an average of about 3000 visits/day. So far, Google has only counted around 400 visits/day. Would anyone happen to know how this could be?

Secondly, we have pages on our site with links to sponsor sites. Is Google Analytics capable of counting when visitors click these links and which links are clicked?

Many thanks.

Serious Website Update - Ncaa Tourney Site

Back in 2001 I designed a website for a hobby of mine. I truly enjoy the game of basketball and have always enjoyed the NCAA Tournament. So, I designed a site where users could register, make their picks, and based on a point system they could win prizes. It has a leaderboard, stats about the game and the users who are playing it and everything. Same as ESPN, but less users (A few 100) and not a million dollars (I can't afford that one.)

The site is not working now, because I take it down after the tournament is over, however it is in need of a serious upgrade.

CURRENTLY IT RUNS ON...

1.) An Access Database (handles user data, login, brackets, everything)
2.) Totally designed in ASP (the old one, not .net) with Javascript used to help with refreshing the webpage after a selection is made in someone's bracket.

So, my questions are and please give lots of details as I've been away from programming for some time, but still have the thirst to do it (different job now)...

1.) What program language should I recode it in to work on any server? (PHP, ASP.NET, CSS, ETC, ETC)

2.) What backend database should I use? Keep Access, use MySQL, thoughts?

3.) Would like to combine data for all 8 years (I have an access database for each year I've had the game.) this thing has been running into one so people can see how good/bad they've done over the years of playing the game on my site.

4.) Is there any way to have my site feed information like NCAA Basketball News and Scores?

5.) I was using a form, javascript, and ASP to fill in the brackets, is Adobe Flash the way to go or is there something better out there?

6.) Any other advice or thoughts would be great.

7.) Do you know of any good poll scripts with bar graphs and such?

8.) If any of these tasks already have a script our there that I can download, please link to it!

Again, this is a hobby of mine and I would love to make it more up to date, faster, and easier to use. Looking for advice from developers/designers that are in the thick of code every day. Thanks!

RESOURCES AT MY DISPOSAL

- Windows Based Server
- Adobe Dreamweaver & Flash CS4 (Just acquired)

Hello all,

I am a big fan of W3schools. I have always turned to it, when in need for any web development issues. Currently I am supposed to work with fbml (facebook markup language) at my company, but cannot find a well organised and easy to learn documentation. I find the documentation available at facebook unhelpful, at least in my case. There is too much information, and no appropriate flow to cater a learning curve. It justs spams your brain with huge amounts of code and information. I am totally confused.

Would it be possible to get fbml on W3schools sometime soon?

Kind Regards
Owais Sami Khan

Image + Text Swap On Mouseover Kickin' My *** In Cs3

Pardon my ignorance, this is my first post and I hope this is the correct forum.

Many years ago I built a website using an old version of Dreamweaver, a template I was given, and a whole lot of cut and past of html code. However, I noticed that on some computers it did not display properly. I had mavens on a Dreamweaver newsgroup check it and they condescendingly told me that it was messed up and I should trash it and start from scratch. Eventually, I got CS3 and intended to learn it and redo the site. Time became a problem and CS3 was harder than I thought. I shelved the idea--until now.

I am takeing the process seriously and have my books out, a subscription on Lynda.com for CS3, reading lots of 3w.schools.com, and a whole lot of time put in. Still, I feel like I'm losing. I understand simple HTML code, and can figure out what things do when I make changes. Still, I'm having a lot of trouble. Here is my current problem that I've been working on for days:

If you go to my site http://www.calypsotheatrical.com/. In the menu bar at left, the text color changes on mouseovers. In the final item "more links" the tiny arrow to the left also changes. (They all did at one point but I lost that function somehow)

Also, If you notice the links on the menu bar use the gray text color and turn white on mouseover while the gray arrow turns yellow. In my original template properties page, the links are set to a yellow but are overided in this menu area. In my new page, (intended to become the new template) any time I assign a link the text turns the color spec-ed on the properties page.

This is where I am so far: http://www.calypsotheatrical.com/ct09/ct09_03_test.html You will notice that the text links in the bar at the bottom have all turned yellow though I want them to be the color of the left side menu.

What I would like to achieve on all menu items is what is currently working on the “More Links” in the initial page listed above. i.e. On mousover of either the arrow image or text to the right, both the text and arrow change color while giving access to the link within.

I understand that the arrow is an image swap in JS and I was able to achieve that in CS3. However, I am unable to tie that to a change in text color on mouseover and I’m unable to get the text to not default to the page properties link colors. From my readings, I believe this is tied to id and class properties but I’m not sure how.

I'd appreciate any help as I've spent days trying to solve this.

thanks

Sql Foreign Keys

First of all, I want to thank you for all of the resources provided by w3schools. My colleagues and I use the site every day. Please keep it up, and THANK YOU!!!

I have a suggestion for content that may be helpful for others:

SQL:FOREIGN KEYS

MySQL's default engine, MyISAM, does not support foreign keys. A query with the proper syntax will succeed with no error message generated, but MySQL will not enforce referential integrity. (For example, it mysteriously allows the addition of a record to table1 with a FK value that does not exist as a PK in table2).

Of course there are other considerations to engine selection, but this issue may be useful for others to discover on this page of the SQL tutorial: http://www.w3schools.com/sql/sql_foreignkey.asp.

The solution I chose to use was to convert my tables to InnoDB. Perhaps you can phrase this more eloquently, but I hope it is helpful!

Thanks again!

Html Coded Vs. Javascript Or Php Generated

I have a few drop down menus that have values and whatnot that fall in order by number (1, 2, 3, etc.). I thought about instead of typing each out, using PHP to generate the menus for me. This woudl pretty much give the same effect as it would if I typed it, except that PHP would have to do it, which I thought make take more loading time.

From there, I thought maybe let JavaScript do it. I figured whatever time it would take for JavaScript to do it would be counter-balanced by the drop in data having to be transfered between server and client. But then my site becomes even more reliant on JavaScript being enabled. It is already mostly JavaScript dependent, but it can be used if JavaScript isn't enabled. It'd just be boring and less user-friendly.

What are everyone's thoughts, HTML coded, PHP genereated, or JavaScript generated; what would be better for the user? Or is it a case by case dependency. If so, what would be best in this case?

I have been asked to fix a few things on a friends website that has been set up in Joomla. I am not familiar with Joomla but have agreed to take a look. One of the issues is in Internet Explorer 7.0 or lower, on the home page the text in the featured box (containing residential, sites and rental etc) over flows the box it is supposed to be sitting in. This views fine in all other browsers as far as I can see.
Handling Cross-references Of Two Large Data Sets?

I don't know this particular paradigm of web development and I was hoping some more experienced developers could help me on this one. I am not posting this in a medium specific forum as I'm uncertain which medium to use.

Let's say I have a registration-based website with the potential for a large amount of traffic. Now, let's say I have functionality in the website where I users are able to write personal notes on any other user which they can recall at a later time. Given the fact that there is a cross-reference of users, the number of possible combination grows exponentially with each new user. What is the best way to store this? Would it be best to just throw it into a single table in a database with three fields and just let it get massive? Do mySQL tables have row restrictions? Would it be better to give each user their own table? What about storing the data in unique XML files for the user? I could see having thousands of tables in a database being an issue, but would it be absurd to have thousands of XML files stored? I'm just concerned that if I lump it into one table that it might take a while to query it. I think it would be less time consuming to maintain a reference table of users to their respective XML file, and just parse that to get the info I need.

Php + Xml(?)

Ok, so for a project I'm working on (a Flickr API app), I'm using a program called AVE (it's used in the digital tv applications development field), I want to be able to send an email to a user but I'm limited in that the user can't access the web from the program. However, I am able to use XMLHttp (similar to XMLHTTPRequest) to make calls to a server. So with that in mind, this is what I would like to do.

1) From my program: Send an HTTP request with a person's email address and a URL as arguments

(***where I need some advice***)

2) If I can figure out Step 1, I want to be able to pass the email address to a php page with a mailto() in it, so that the persons email address can become the 'To:' part of the email, and the URL can become the body of the message.

3) Have my contact.php send an email to that person with the URL in the body

In other words, have my program send the address and the URL (in XML?) to a contact.php page on my server, have the form work by itself and send an email.

Can PHP do this by itself? Sorry if this sounds confusing, but basically can a php page work by itself without someone actually having to click a submit button?

One of my ongoing projects is to research EBIF as a standard and how to get it onto a machine so we can start learning it. Now I know this is website forum, but I was wondering if anyone knew of any good websites, similar in vein to the W3C and W3Schools where they would have an active community dedicated to development, standards, Q & A, etc like there is here? I have found the website www.oedn.net and was just wondering if anybody here was into any of this or knew of any resources? (note: the last post in their forum was 6 weeks ago...not exactly 'active', lol) It doesn't have to be just for EBIF, but anything related to the development of interactive TV applications. For example, right now I'm studying projects created with AVE, using ActiveVideo Scripting. Thanks in advance for any responses, suggestions, or help!

I have created a unordered list with each item being a link, but have been unable to increase the space between each item on the list (vertically). At the moment it looks like the spacing below. I want to basically create a space of about 30px between each item.

Item 1
Item 2
Item 3
How do I create the space? The list is enclosed in a div.
Im sure this is very simple but I would appreciate any input.
Thanks

I am interested in creating an online ordering system for my restaurant. I dabble in Web Design and have built my own site, and figure that some of you web gurus would know the best way to do this.
I'd like to have online ordering, with an interface like any other ecommerce system, perhaps linked with zencart and 2checkout, but of course containing the time the item needing to be cooked, the time it is needed, contact information for customer, but then have the order print by fax into the restaurant, into email containing the relevant information.

What do you guys think, how would you do this in my position?

Ie6 Emulators / Plugins *solved, After A Fashion*

I've been having a look for IE6 emulators or plugins so that I can view pages as they would look in IE6 in a browser that offers the inspect element/developer tools options I've come to expect from modern browsers. It would be a lot easier making my site look right in IE6 if I could see things like the browser's interpretation of the box model for the page elements. I haven't really found what I've been looking for. Tons of plugins that will open IE browsers within FF, or that will launch IE from FF...but that's not really what I need, as its always modern versions of IE. I have tried installing IE 6 but I have IE8 and it won't install since I have a later version.

Anyone have any thoughts? I can see the output of IE6 in AOL's built in browser, and it's not good, but fixing it is a pain. Life editing like FF offers would be incredibly useful.

I just learned that I can set a meta tag to make IE8 display my site as IE5/7 which is fine
