My social network for computing majors

Hello all members of W3Schools,

I am new to the W3Schools forum and I recently created a website/social network for computing majors. I would really appreciate any critiques or potential new members to the site. Like most social networks, you have to create an account to gain any access. I created it with html, css, javascript, jquery, and php within a span of 4 weeks.

Thank you for your time.

For the style I was going for technologic type feel, hence the hex pattern background. I thought it would also be interesting if I used <fieldset> & <legend> to highlight sections of the website. I was trying to be different/unique with the design overall. Purple, the main color of the website, also gives it that mysterious feel. Which is exactly what I wanted using this Anonymous kind of alias.

I guess what gives me the "retro" feeling is the large number of rectangular sharp-cornered boxes. Everyone now uses the corner radius for rounded boundaries and a more open look. Back when layouts used tables there was a natural inclination to make a boxy looking design full of rectangles.

So is it 100% Php?

I too think the site is a bit 'retro', unless you're targeting a particular group of people who this works for, eg 80s/90s computer game enthusiasts, this is generally not a good idea. I think removing the white borders around the buttons and content areas would improve the design enormously, and bring it more into the 2010s. Modern websites also tend not to go right from edge to edge of the screen.
