In this common case you have a div containing an img with some floating. The image appears outside its containing div.

 

I don't get it, given that the contained image has its size specified, shouldn't the containing div be able to calculate the apropriate size before rendering?

 

So, how are things working in reality?

Floating causes the parent container not being able to identify the area of the image so it collapses. Using overflow: hidden; on the parent container of floated child element fixes this issue.
