justinbriggs1
Hey ya'll, I just purchased a Virtual private server from Host Gator, and I realize now that I don't get any tech support since it is unmanaged. Stupid question, but where do I find my web directory? I searched for index.html, which I found in the share folder, but that doesn't seem to be it since modifying the content did not change the placeholder page on the web. Any ideas? I'm sure I'll have a million more questions soon!
justsomeguy
If the server only has one hosting account then you should find a public_html directory in your account. If you can set up multiple accounts, all accounts on the server go in the /home directory, and you can find the public_html folder in each home directory. e.g. /home/username/public_html
justinbriggs1
That's what I thought, but I didn't see my username directory in the home directory. There is actually nothing in the home directory. Do I have configure this manually perhaps?
justsomeguy
Yeah, you may need to create a hosting account. The root account is not in the home directory (it's in /root/public_html), but it will make the server easier to manage if you set up accounts for each site you want to host. justinbriggs1
OK, nevermind. It is in the var/www/html folder. The placeholder must have been a default one for all VPS's. I'll look into creating separate hosting accounts, though. Thanks for your help.
