Testing in Cell Phones and Tablets

Recommended Posts

Dear all:

I would appreciate if one can explain how I can practically test what my website will look like in a cell phone or tablet prior to launching it.

Several browsers including Chrome and Opera will let you emulate mobile devices through the developer tools.

Many thanks justomeguy. How would I know which browsers don't have such emulation capability, and how to test against them?

A browser like Chrome will let you emulate a range of mobile devices. It's not the same as testing on that device, it only sends the user agent to the server and then shows the site at the device's resolution. There is not a substitute for actually testing in different browsers. Emulation will not emulate any bugs that might be present in the other browsers, it's just telling the server that you're on an iPhone or whatever.

If you use tools like Grunt or Gulp, or Apache, you can run a local webserver which will allow you to open your site on those devices over the local intranet created by your router / wifi network. Essentially, nothing beats actually testing with the actual devices in hand.
