  1. w3fools sounds American to me...not to stereotype, most American's are decent people but it's normally a bored idiot from there who create websites slating other people. Do people have bothing better to do? If there is a problem on w3schools then why not just e-mail them/post on here and just say say "this, that and t'other is wrong, can you please fix it?" Why bother being so bored you want to create a new website just bsically causing chaos...somebody obviously has a lot of time on their hands.Besides, w3fools website doesn't even look good, looks like it was created in front page by some teenager who has clearly not grown up fully yet. How much vertical scrolling do they need? The only type of websites that can get away with that are forums, online stores, and social networking websites.I just don't see why they needed to create another website linking to other places when they could have just been helpful and posted on here any problems instead of slating a website millions of people use in order to learn the basics of website design/development. They're obviously just trying to trive traffic away or some rubbish, i think they should spend their time more wisely and create a website to do something useful.
Everything is a matter of perspective. One could easily debate there (w3fools) approach is not the most appropriate way to initiate change. But the simple fact is, if there is misinformation, errors, or any other inaccuracies they should be fixed. The authors of w3schools are making changes and corrections. It may be one's opinion that these changes are taking too much time - but they are being made and that is surely better than them not. Here are a couple articles dating back to the beginning of the year when this was "in the news" that might be of interest to some:W3Fools Takes on W3SchoolsW3Schools Responds to W3FoolsWhat is comforting to me, having been associated with w3schools (particularly the launch and success of the forums), is that this has not turned into a mud slinging battle. I respect Kai Jim and the rest of w3schools authors/staff for not getting sucked into what could have easily turned into a situation that would really turn people off. Instead, the response to the criticism (whether you like the angle or not) has been well played and everyone benefits - w3schools.com is being updated, w3fools mission/egos are being served, but most importantly the end user (the web development community) is getting the best, most user friendly collection of online web development tutorials.
  2. Thanks for sharing your implementation of version control. I liked the fact that you detailed your professional and person methodology. I'll have to do the same. What I posted is just what I have at work. At home, it is a little different since I don't have a dev or test server. I do all my work on my clients live sites. I know that seems scary but I meticulously plan every thing I work on and always have a tagged version to fall back on should I really screw something up. Granted, I will work on copy pages as needed so it's far from ideal but that's what version control has been important for me there. Thanks again for taking the time post that.

  3. A version control system (or revision control system) is a combination of technologies and practices for tracking and controlling changes to a project's files, in particular to source code, documentation, and web pages. One of the more popular applications on the market at Visual Source Safe, Team Foundation Server, and Subversion. There is a lot to know about version control. A good, informal, introduction can be found at Producing Open Source Software - How to Run a Successful Free Software Project. When creating new topics of discussion in this area, please be sure to include which version control software you are currently using or questioning. It is also very helpful to include the operating system(s) involved.

  4. Oh, I thought they were talking about Charles Cabbage and his famous son, Brussel, called Sprout. His cousin on his wife's side was Cole Slaw. Cole married an Irish lass and had a son George Bernard Slaw.
That has NOTHING to do with the original topic O_o. Not to mention it's not the most intelligent thing I've ever read.
This was meant for this post (I"ll move it later).
  5. I guess I was blinded to humor because of my blazing distaste for image signatures. I apologize for what I can see now as an over reaction to an otherwise harmless continuation of humorous posts.

  6. FWIW, I really was trying to be funny. So over the top, I believed, my comments could not be taken seriously. I guess I was mistaken. Skemcin, I apologize publicly. And now I think I'll take a little vacation.
Your reply is worth alot. Just add some emotion icons so there is some indication of your mood. Just one smiley face here or there is often all it takes to understand you were joking. :) if I ended this with :) you would think I was pissed, when I'm actually not. A misunderstanding, is a misunderstanding.:)P.S. No need to take a "vacation"
  7. Skemcin:You really need to relax and get in touch with your feelings. What's really up with you and Xalor's sig? Some repressed issues with your father? Maybe someone hit you with a blue and green towel?Come on, man, let it out. We're here for you.
Look, if someone asks for an opinion, I am entitled to give mine. I, otherwise, do not make it a habit of sharing my position on matters unless I am asked by several people, asked several times, or feel rather passionate about the topic - hence my reply here. If you want to read my post and interject some attitude on my part - that's your disposition. I did not make any personal attacks on him, I did not insult, degrade, or belittle him in any way shape or form. I offer blatant constructive criticism. And I do not appreciate you instructing me to relax. You, however, have decided to get personal by bringing in my family (particularly my father) by insinuating I have repressed feelings - that is inappropriate and you need to make sure you refrain from doing that in the future. As for the signature, you ask "What's really up with you and Xalor's sig?", didn't I make myself clear already?
  8. What do you guys think of my sig and avatar?
    Where do I start . . .
    1. can't stand image signatures at all - but the majority rule permits them here
    2. way too big
    3. don't understand why one would want to advertise they are in training
    4. doesn't show any extraordinary skill - if it was art, I'd be impressed but still disapprove of its use in this manner
    5. there is a place for advertising/self promotion - your own website
    6. did I mention I can't stand image signatures?
    7. maybe I could put it this way, any image signature, especially this one, is a distraction to the text/threads people come here to read
    8. and much much more...

    pumpkin-vomit.jpg(but that's not how I really feel):)

  9. I think I prefer Sample one for the way the "V" is sized and positioned in the background. I, too, think the cream background is too light - if it were darkened up a little, the white content area will contrast more and therefore stand out more than blend in. The "V" will also become more pronounced. Then again, I'd like to see the content area of your current site simply changed to white background with black text - that might be all it needs to address the "darkness". Work a little with your nav buttons and you might not have to do that much more - especially if you can do this all through CSS.

  10. Flamewars start because of a disagreement on opinions. While I guess there are a few opinions here, like tables vs. divs, or favorite browser (I realize we all agree that Opera is the best browser in the world), or favorite text editor (clearly ConTEXT is superior) most of the stuff discussed here is fact. I mean, it's hard to start a flamewar about the correct syntax of PHP's strpos function or how cookies work. Believe me, I've tried.
lol - no argument on the browser hey - lol - what is conTEXT.:)In all sincerity, you're absolutely right, it is hard to start a disbute over something that is fact driven.
Are you serious? justsomeguy isnt a moderator? WTF lol,
You might be confusing moderator with facilitator or someone who is simply (and thankfully) a very active member of the community. Might I also take the opportunity to add just how valuable a member that guy is. He may be just some guy to you, but he's been more than that for the community.
  11. Well I can't imagine the sort of people who come on here are people who want to start fights usually. :)
You'd be surprised. Not that it happens here often - it doesn't, especially compared to other forums I've moderated. Early on we had a few hot heads that either left, got banned, or have settled in and realized that no one is perfect and/or that there is always more than on correct and incorrect way to code a page.In any respect, all the active members here are well behaved and well-mannered individuals that only occasionally need a little suggestive guidance. Thanks for all the kind responses everyone has posted. We started this thread to give members an opportunity to provide the feedback we would need to be the best moderators we could for you.
  12. Thank you menz, I appreciate nice people.
Thank you. I appreciate nice people too.
I've posted reviews in over 20 forums, in all of those, exactly everyone found something to critique. Like hundreds of people have posted an opinion, suggestion or feedback. If you can't really come up with anything, I'd say you are the guy with problems.
I found and shared something to critique as well. How come you have chosen to attack me rather than ask me to elaborate on my thoughts?
That was just a bunch of sites. If you go through all my review topics, you will understand I am right.
Most of those replies give feedback on what is functionally working or not - that is testing. Critiquing a site is totally different and usually includes some background information like the mission of the site or future plans - something to base the critique off of. In some of the situations, it took more than 2 weeks to get a reply and you even had a conversation with yourself for while in one - at least there are folks here willing to discuss this with you (for now). What are you "right" about anyway?
You guys up are basically only telling me how bad my forums is, but that's not really what I would like to hear. It's okay to say it's bad, but tell me how I can improve it. If you are not willing to give me that, then don't even bother to answer.Don't go on with lack of specifics even though that might be so true...(ok that doesn't help a bloody smack) instead, tell me what kind of specifics I could add.
A critique is not a statement or collection of thoughts that is necessarily going to be want you want to hear. If you had some preconceived ideas of where folks should focus their criticism, then you should have shared it. Any critique is better than no critique.
I'm not going to dig deeper in this useless conversation because it has no value, but I suggest you to inform an administrator immediately to change the rules so the other people like me (who doesn't got a unique design nor a custom web application) won't have the same issue when asking for a review.I don't expect any answer but you should really change the rules, maybe try something like this:"People with bad sites may not post in this forum."
Our rules do not need to be restated. Did you read the "Before You Post" topic (http://w3schools.invisionzone.com/index.php?showtopic=15248), specifically the second sentence in the last paragraph? You seem to be complaining about a lack of criticism and/or the fact that it did not meet your expectations (of which none were communicated). There have been plenty of other folks that have posted in this section that have received harsh criticism for their work but have been able to handle it much better than you have.If you have a serious problem with the way you have been received here and you have reviewed your responses and feel that you have been very reasonable and very helpful, then send me a Private Message and I will address the issues myself. If you feel that I am not the appropriate moderator/administrator to deal with your situation, please feel free to find another(http://w3schools.invisionzone.com/index.php?act=Stats&CODE=leaders).From here, you can either accept the criticism (or lack there of) that you have received, specify more clearly what type of feedback you would like to receive, or drop the matter all together and move on.I sincerely hope that you find it in your "heart" to simply reply with more clarifying statements regarding what specifically you would like folks to examine and critique (i.e. the design/skin or the discussion topics/categories or the fact that there is nothing else to the site - not even an about us section).
  13. lol nice way to put it skemcin and no need to be so rude is there
Thanks for your feedback. My statements are justified in that it was one of three similar posts by the individual. that have since been removed. The "rudeness" is subject to the individual who interprets my statement. I prefer to label it as "blunt" or "cutting to the chase" or better yet "blatantly honest". Either way, I can understand how people see it as being rude.I did say "please" :) plus, this post saw no light for over two months and the bump is not even really related to the original subject - just I am guilty of the same right now.:)
  14. I have to say I am impressed as well. Even from where you started with you first launched this site - you've made good judgements on how to enhance it without getting too out of control. Its a great design with plenty of subtle complimentary elements - like the icons in the footer that mimic the header navigation. Here are my only criticisms:(and its just me being picky since you're that good)

    • I'd like to see you use the "title" attribute in your links as they can used to describe the target in more detail than the images it wraps. Like the footer links - the house icon could have "title='Return to my homepage.'" let alone all your <a> tags.
    • The change theme idea is nice and well done but I thin the icons are a little over powering. I almost see them being no bigger than the flags - to keep elements proportionate throughout the site. I'm not sure if that would be a good place to keep them, but toning them down might keep them from being distracting or otherwise seem to be an after thought.
    • I like "lightboxes" alot but I've always disliked scrolling down to close the window - I'm on 1024x768, but thats more of a personal thing
    • this may take the idea to far, but a prompt to remember (by way of cookie) the theme that I select might add a little value to the feature so I do not have to select it each time I return to admire design that I am not capable of myself.
    • On your about page the profile div (i didn't check) might do better absolutely positioned and put at the bottom of the page but only (and just only) for the sake of printing. Or the print.css might need to be modified so the content shows up in the big white space it renders now.

Again, great work all around, these are just cosmetics in my opinion.

  15. it depends on what you want to do an how you want it done. For instance, you can download software that will take an image from a camera every so often and FTP the image to a specified location. Or you can have a video camera hooked up to your PC and stream it in real time. Both have varying levels of initial hardware and software needs just to get it going. What "language" you use from that point really is irrelevant since they all can be used to present your images in any imagine way. Many sites use java, but many just server them straight up.So, a little more detail outlining what you intend to do will allow members to give you more specific and more helpful information.

  17. Here is my reason for using IE.It is possible the least capable browser, so I can only use code which everyone can view.eg.If I used FF, then something I could view at home, someone using IE in some cases coundn't.But I have to say, IE7 looks dreadful.
I understand your perspective here but I think this approach only contributes to the problem - and in fact is part of why there is a problem.Essentially you are saying that you code for IE trusting that things will look good in other browsers. Thats not a very good approach and is frankly rather presumptuous. You should be writing good, standard compliant code, point blank. If everyone wrote good code than the users would realize IE is crap and they would choose a standard compliant browser so their user experience is consistent (the whole purpose for having standards). Then, maybe (lol) Microsoft would get their heads out of the clouds long enough to re-engineer their browser from the ground up to be standard compliant. But, as evident with IE7, they still try to take it for granted that their browser is still the most popular one (a whole other discussion there). But the web user is more savvy, and will only become more savvy with each passing year. So they will be using a more standard compliant browser and your code and your habits will be more frowned upon accordingly.I'd really suggest that you revisit your reasons for using IE. You may still have other legitimate reasons that I simply could not dispute - personal or functional preferences. But coding, alone, as you describe is not a good reason to be using IE from my experience.
  18. What the ###### dude? Talk about grave digging.. Did you not notice that this was from over 2 years ago? Please do not do that ever again :).EDIT: Sorry mods, I forgot about the report button. Now I will get yelled at!
If you knew you were gonna yelled, maybe you should have come back an edited your post. Now, as for your comment, it is completely inappropriate and I want to nip this in the butt right now.a.) there is no policy, written or not, that states you are not allowed to bring a post back to life.b.) you're not a moderator so please do not make commanding statements to members that suggest they change their behavior - you simply have no authority to.c.) please refrain from using or implying the use of vulgar language - it is inappropriate and unacceptable.Hence, your warning.
  19. *SMACK*
*SMACK* Back in line soldier, I'll handle the discipline around here.
I think the moderators do a pretty good job except for that aspnetguy :) j/k :)
*SMACK* Did anyone ask you to share your opinion, get back in formation.
    haha :)
