    "?" in Urls

You're welcome. That's why there is no such thing as a dumb question. Glad to see several folks finding the explanation helpful.:)Its odd just how much it makes sense. The "?" basically tells you, "Hey, I have a question(?)!". And if you have more than one question, its like "and (&) I have another, and (&) another, and (&) another. Then, of course, this url string can be triggered by a form using the "get" method or by a hypertext link. What can be fun is toying with the url. Click this link which posts to this topic. Then after the "&hl=" type a word like "thanks" so the url reads "...?showtopic=11217&hl=thanks" and you will see the page is programmed to accept "hl" as a URL parameter which it then uses to highlight words on the page.Anyway, have fun - using URL variables opens a whole world to conditions you can program with asp, php, or coldfusion. Lots of fun.
  2. OT: I looking for a 1:24 scale Silver 1979 Porsche 924 to sit next to the two full-size ones I have in the garage.
  3. the xhtml mime type is not defined in your browser. And if it doesn't validate when you change the name, then check your DOC TYPE.
  4. when in doubt, use this to investigate exactly what you need.<cfdump var"#cgi#" label="Use at will CGI variables!">I put this and even a session dump in my "onrequestend.cfm" file. I keep it there commented out so I can easily get the information whenever i want. Not sure if you know that, but the "onrequestend.cfm" file works just like the "application.cfm" file except that it gets run at the end of every file. Its helpful in a number of situations.
  5. nice - CONGRATULATIONS.Planning is key, so try to get some sort of agenda together for that call. If you've not had any other conversations about the site that what you've shared, then you'll need to establish the site design (not graphical, but the layout). Then, you fit the content in by deciding what content will stay and what content will go. Once your content is conceptualized in your new layout, then you start on your graphic user interface. If you are strictly doing a redesign, then most of that is a walk in the park and you can get right to the nit and gritty.
  6. I'm happy to share my perspective, especially if it's useful. You can use your judgment on how to update me/the community. If you have something general to report, i'd probably just tack it on here. If you have something you feel you'd prefer my direct and discrete feedback on, then feel free to send an email or private message - whatever makes you most comfortable. My feedback on your payment approach is really more of a perfect world scenario. That's why I mentioned that you gotta do what you gotta do to break that chastity belt. So, if its compromising pay or risking it all together, there is always the satisfaction in learning a lesson early on. Again, not that anything at all is wrong with your approach - each angle has a risk. My first commercial job was a trade - I bartered a couple web pages for a Rossignol snowboard and Trek Mountain Bike. I latter earned a complete paid redesign, so everything is subjective. I'm not sure you should feel to obligated to put a price out there with the feedback he is giving you. But, that shouldn;t stop you from keeping track of ALL your hours. Divide them up in consulting, design, and coding. That way you can always produce a bill for him even if he could care less. In fact, if you come in above what he pays you, he's gonna write that off of that business' taxes - so I'd be surprised if he doesn't ask you for something eventually. so, keep a record - not so much for him, but for you - you will need to reference this information to better estimate future jobs. Just wait until its all said and done - then you can present the hours and negotiate final payment. As for rates, I feel the more generic you label your rates, the more room you have to work with your client. If you say $xxx per graphic, then your client will begin to think on a micro level. You want the client to think big. Its your job to take the big picture and fit it into the little box they are willing to pay for. So don't limit your clients perspective by giving them restricting parameters to think within. (my opinion anyway)I'm sure I can find some time to help with your coding issue. Is this the one you have posted on the board already? I've not read through it, but it seems there are some replies - are there no solutions? Are you open to a different approach if I review the method/approach you are taking. Naturally, I'll try to make your approach work first and foremost. The flash animation in the top of the site is pretty basic and its something I could recreate for you within a couple hours. So, you could always say that you have contacts that could get the flash job done. Whatever the case may be, work on a storyboard for the flash movie and get him to sign off on it. Send it along and I can give you an estimate (probably just a couple hundred). I can wait until after you are paid, or you could put a still image up until you can pay me - whatever you like.Anyway, keep in touch in whatever way you like - PM is fine for specific things.
  7. If I were a girl and found my picture, I'd slap the **** out of you. What other pictures do you have of me?Now, I don''t know if you are joking or not, but if you do know this girl, print out the design, tell her where you got the photo, and let her know that you would only use her image with her permission. If she is a minor - GET PARENTAL CONSENT. The last thing you need is a real pervert tracking you and/or here down through a site and doing something. This is no joke, I work with this every day at my job - so just be careful. Whatever you do you, do not put the girl out there like that - that makes her too vulnerable and she could hate you forever. People who feel the need to communicate affection publicly don't have the balls to do it privately. Personally, I'd be more flattered that you came to me face-to-face, said what you had to say, then asked if you could post it.but, have your fun . . .p.s. she does have nice eyes
  8. @allTo respond to a couple points made in the replies - there is no doubt that the rate people charge is going to greatly fluctuate from one region to another - I did a 6 page website and collected over $1k (avg file size 8.5kb). Also, one must consider what is actually labeled as billable hours. For instance, one who charges $30/hour might disclose that they charge for every conversation that is longer that 15 min. I, for example, charge in the $150/hr range and only bill my clients for scheduled meetings. Obviously, I nip the calls that go in that direction - yes my clients push that threshold but that is business. So, yes, I think $25 a page is cheap, but that might only be a static HTML page and involving no server side language. I, for instance, go about things a little differently. I charge 1 hr for a static page unless a specification shows it to be more involved or a general PITA to code. But if the client wants an application - eg database driven FAQs or Event Registration - then I start with a flat $500. Then hours are added to that based on the complexity of the application. The flat fee compensates me for the effort put into the database planning and general application foundation. The additional hours take care of my coding.@Life In BinaryThanks for your reply. The additional information is a big help and indicates a lot more about your capabilities and the situation that they are being applied. I think you have taken the right approach to communicating with your client. Be honest about your availability - I've said it here before how i disclose that my discounted rate is because my time is limited due to my full time obligations. Your response to the clients question about their site is more than appropriate - especially when you disclaim the fact that ANY developer is going to find something wrong with ANY site they review. In fact, that is the opening state for every site analysis I write. But i point out how that is not bad thing - the web changes every day and so does its technology - so one can expect to find different ways of doing things. The important thing is to communicate why your approach is better - if even needed. I've gotten sites simple based on the recommendation that not much really needed to be done. In any respect, I think you are going about everything very well. I only have issue with your approach to payment. You need to establish your worth - he has his. If you had tons of money, then I can see you leaving it up to him. Establish your worth - if you think your are worth $50/hr. then charge it. If you are 100% confident about your ability to do the site, then set the worth.Anyone in the Seatle, WA area of the US might know if a small coffee shop that does charge or even set a price for coffee. You can walk in there and get a cup of self serve coffee and walk out. Its all on the honor system. I bring this up because studies have shown that people DO NOT want to set the price for something they are buying. They want be told, especially in retail, what the price is - one less decision to make. Its a nobel effort but it is not going to get you too far. Of course, this guys ambition is not to be the next Starbucks, so he seems to be content barely breaking even. But internet development is not something to let people determine the cost - especially when most clients have trouble finding the power button to their computer.Again, I think you are definitely moving in the right direction with your first job. Keep the channels open, keep him informed on progress and communicate your challenges - a compromise may be offered. But, just tell him how much it will cost - leave yourself a little room for overrun and just make sure you can sleep at night.Keep us informed on your progress. I, for one, would love to monitor your efforts.
  9. what you charge should be based solely on your skill. I'm not completely sure of your capabilities, but based on the questions you've posed in the forum - granted, only based on that - I think $30/hr is fair. I would caution using your first contracted client as a learning experiment. Granted, every job should push your skills to the limit and challenge you, but it should not be a completely learning experience. The ONLY exception to this would be if you have fully disclosed your skills and abilities to your client. If they are knowing supporting it, then go for it and good luck. I, for one, completely understand that you have to start somewhere - just start (and stay) honest and true to your abilities.

    "?" in Urls

If the "?" appears in the URL with nothing after it, then it simply means that the application is programmed to send something in the URL but no criteria was met to supply it information. For instance, if you submit a form which uses the "get" method, then all the form fields are put in the URL. If you submit the form without selecting anything, then it could be possible to have a "?" with nothing after it.All in all, if you see it like that, then it is poor programming as the developer has not built enough logic to accommodate all situations. The easiest way to understand forms and even URL parameters is to think of them like questions and answers.?page=home&title=WelcomeWhatever is before each "=" sign is the question and what ever appears after is the answer. So here the first question is "what is my page" and your answer is "home" - as in load the homepage. The second question (every new question after the first (?) is separated by the ampersand (&)) is asking "what is the title" and the answer is "Welcome" - as in put the word "Welcome" in the <title> tag and maybe in the <h1> tag.In forms, its the same thing:<input type="text" name="page" value="home"><input type="text" name="title" value="Welcome">Here the "name" attribute acts as the question and the "value" attribute acts as the answer. Typically, the value is entered by the web site visitor. But this produces the same result.Hope that helps.
  13. sounds like you need a new job - those are horrible working conditions:)
  14. A design competition would get, well, competitive. A competitive environment is not conducive to learning. Since the primary goal of this site and its forums is to educate people and to assist them in the learning process, I would be worried that a design competition would intimidate many folks - especially the ones just learning. I know that if I came to a site that was dubbed as a great learning place and I get there and see all these design well beyond my capabilities, then I'd likely not come back - it would be out of my league. But most of all, this is not a graphic design site - it is primarily an application develop site/forum. If you have design skills you would like to challenge yourself, try something like this. Design, related to this site and forum, is more about how to lay a site out, the navigation structure and folder structure - not the graphic design.I'm not at all saying the idea is not good and would not attract some attention, I just worry that is not right for this site and audience - especially since there is not enough human resources to manage it, let alone organize it.(at least from my understanding)But, I could be wrong and welcome any one else to offer their thoughts ...
  15. I wish it were that easy. The moderators volunteer their time as the authors of w3schools.com do not have the time to invest in maintaining the forum. In fact, they loose money by keeping the discussion board online. Thankfully, the moderating team is able to do enough work to limit their interaction. In any respect, a good design is not necessarily bring more people to the site and then forums - there is more work involved than that. I do not think there would be a design contest anytime soon but that doesn't necessarily mean that one could not be organized. Who knows, maybe if the top five designs were submitted to the w3schools authors, they might consider a redesign.
  16. I'm not sure how that host works, but you might want to look in your Hosting Service Control Panel. It is common for providers to define their own customer error pages. I've taken a different approach for my sites. Since I can define the alternate URL for all error messages, I simply have them all point to one page: servererror.cfm. Then, based on the error, I simply add a url query string so it reads servererror.cfm?type=404 or servererror.cfm?type=403. Then I have all my logic on one page to display what I want (I database my message content and query based on error type). Much easier to maintain than 30 some odd pages. On an unrelated note, when you say you have 5 domains pointing to the same server, you mean that you have 5 domain names that point to the same IP address and therefore show the same content? Like domainA.com and domainB.com look the same and have the same content because it is the same code? If so, it is very possible that your site will not be index by search engines. If that is a concern to you, then I've suggest picking a parent domain name and set permanent 301 redirects for the other four.
  17. I honestly appreciated the effort, but I have to say that I am disappointed that you answered some correct - I mean if you're gonna be a comedian, go all the way.:)html = Howard Make Lunchdhtml = Didn't Howard Make Lunchxsl = eXtremely Sexy LadyWell, I guess that's all I'm gonna get outta this crowd!:-)I'm all set with my quiz and I have two interview Tuesday - we'll see how the candidates do.
  18. My servers are 2003 but my clients are still W2k - and I don't see a reason to brave Vista. :)I've heard that 2003 does some quirky things - I wonder if that is one of them? I'm assuming you have plenty of memory. The only thing I might have set up different is my caching - I clear my cache, cookies, and everything else when my browser closes (but unsure how that might relate).
  19. Zip codes are databased and they are subscription based - you pay $xxx a month to get updates.I do the countries the same way. I am not aware of a centralized database that keeps track for the countries or states in each country. In theory, they do not change as often.
  20. I keep mine in an include file but all database driven. <option value="AL">Alabama (AL)</option><option value="AK">Alaska (AK)</option><option value="AB">Alberta (AB)</option><option value="AS">American Samoa (AS)</option><option value="AZ">Arizona (AZ)</option><option value="AR">Arkansas (AR)</option><option value="AP">Asia/Pacific (AP)</option><option value="AE">Atlantic/Europe/Africa (AE)</option><option value="BC">British Columbia (BC)</option><option value="CA">California (CA)</option><option value="AA">Carribean/Latin America (AA)</option><option value="CO">Colorado (CO)</option><option value="CT">Connecticut (CT)</option><option value="DE">Delaware (DE)</option><option value="DC">District of Columbia (DC)</option><option value="FM">Fed. 21. I'm using 2.0.0.1 but have never experienced that problem. I typically have at least 4 or 5 tabs open and more often than not I might have twice that many open in two windows. But I've never lost any functionality unless I hit a site with a ridiculous java applet - then everything freeze while it instantiates.
  22. I can use these:http://thewavemag.com/pagegen.php?pagename...articleid=25853 in the face to face to see if he is a human and ever watched Blade Runner.:)Here is another question I have:What causes the browser to report these errors codes:404403500401400200408
  23. lol - yeah ya always through in a few to have fun. You never really expect someone to get them all, but its interesting to see how people "guess" some of them.Anyway, those are only two questions of the 10 I have. I'm wondering if anyone has something I don't - I don't wanna post the whole quiz.
  24. I thought that was English
  25. Everytime I submit, I get:Error: Unknown column 'dato' in 'field list'Required field should be indicated or other restrictions should be communicated.Otherwise a good start on building your own database driven application.
