Mmm ok because all these people keep telling me you dont need to learn HTML, just learn XML and XHTML

Hi there i need some help on a starting point, as i have gotten a bunch of diffrent awsners.I start off by learning XHTML correct?Then XML?OR are these both the same?And then later on learn how to use JavaScript,Any help would be awsome.
