  1. Hi! I'm afraid I'm ignorant to something here, as I've been trying to apply particular effects via css on this simple site, but cannot figure it out! Before I make even more of a code mess, I thought I'd see if anyone with a clue could help point me in some direction as to what it might be... thank you for your help! INDEX: body {height:auto;background-color:black;margin: 10px auto;}#main {width:1280;background-image:url(images/bg.jpg);margin-left:auto;margin-right:auto;background-repeat:no-repeat;} #header {width:1280;margin:50 0 0 0;background-image:url('images/logo.png');background-repeat:n

Hello, I wasn't sure if I should post this under CSS, HTML, or whatever so I ended up in the general topics. I am relatively new to we development. I had page that the back ground is an image of a color to goes light at the top to a darker shade at the bottom (gradient). So normally to save load time I assume you would just apply the color via CSS so it doesn't have to load and actually image. Is it possible to use some sort of HTML, CSS, etc to apply a gradient to the solid color? Or do i just have to load the image. I hope this makes sense. I appreciate the help. Thanks
  3. Hi I'm just learning CSS/HTML (self-taught) and am curious about the process required to achieve something like the image that can be seen on this blog page: http://theletteredcottage.net/our-house/ Any advice/info, and in particular some example code, would be fantastic. As stated, I'm only a newbie so simple explanations with limited jargon much appreciated :-) Thanks so much!
  4. Hello everyone, Lets share the best books you know related to web development. Share their links as well so that they can easily be downloaded should be in PDF formate. Thanks.
  5. Me, again. This time, I just can't seem to get my head around it. I came up with this idea when I was looking at the link tutorial. So my links on my website are little button pictures right? And I want them to change to a pressed button when they are active. How would I do that? This is probably a stupid, but I just can't get whatever I am not getting right now. And yes I have read the tutorial and searched the reference, I even went to other web pages and inspected their elements.
  6. Hello. Like I said in one of my other posts, the one about giving a table a margin on a style sheet; I am new to CSS really and I am making a little website for a school project. Last night I spent making some graphics for it and all, but my style sheet, as far as I know, is really unorganized, and I am really confused on how it's supposed to be organized. Most of the things I just put in it, and kept moving them around till it worked, but I am getting tired with that process, and it's really messy. Ill post my style sheet beneath, and if anybody could help me organized, that would be wonderfu
  7. Sorry if this may have been answered before but I could really do with a specific answer to a specific set of circumstances. I am very new to anything other than basic css.The best way to describe what I mean would be to look at the site in various browsers. http://www.livingwithaddicts.com/ .I have put this together for a charity using the Joomla CMS (version2.5). If you look at the site in Firefox it is as (for now as it ain't finished) how it's meant to look. It's fine in Chrome and passable apart from some easily solvable positioning issues in Opera. Then we get to IE and I have just added
  8. I've seen this done several ways, but I'm looking for a simple solution. The main content area is white, with rounded corners at the top and a shadow around the top and both sides.(See image below) I've saved out the image in 2 pieces, one contains the top 72px or so with the rounded corners. The other is a slim piece, the same width as the top piece, including the shadow. I've created a div and gave it an id="contentcontainer", where all of the content for the pages will rest. Inside of this div is where I need these images to show up. The top image with the rounded corners needs to always be
  9. http://pastehtml.com/view/buakxo9oj.html I know it lacks the images but I think you can see what I having a problem with: the dropdown menu isn't vertically centered with the page, I tried margin:auto; but it didn't work. In the bottom the footer is overlapping with an upper section, I tried positioning it but it won't go any further down this the HTML <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd"><html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"><head><meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; c
  10. Hi, I know that this might be a quite common question but I haven't found a solution for my site so maybe you guys can help me out. I am not very experienced with this CSS stuff and I haven't been able to come up with a solution. My navigation bar works fine with other browsers but not firefox. You can find a live view of the site at: http://www.korukivi.fi/?page_id=375 Thanks for any help!
  11. I am trying to make a horizontal menu bar for a website. I am doing it the way they show on W3 with a <ul> list and css formatting. Every attempt looks horrible in IE 8.0. The usual bullets are still present and it is still vertical instead of floating horizontal. Can anyone take a look at this and tell me how to make this type of menu show up properly in the common versions of IE? Here is the site: http://cwarchitect.d....com/index.html
  12. Hello! I'm working on building a small website for my company. I need help in figuring out why the menu isn't working out... Here is what I've built so far: http://silverbergandsons.com/beta/ I can't figure out why the list items are shifted over to the right like there's an invisible bullet there... this applies to the submenu too. When I use width:100% for the background of the menu, it stretches out the page to the right side... Probably has sometime to do with the invisible bullets in problem #1. I can't get the images/menu buttons centered in the page... And lastly, I've
  13. I've been working on this for a while and I've had varying levels of success but have not been able to achieve what I'm after so far. I'm looking to do this with CSS, no jquery or anything like it. I followed the "Son of Suckerfish" tutorial and that got me somewhat there, but when I tried to make the 2nd level dropdown, it started getting all funky and I haven't been able to figure it out. Not to mention, it isn't working properly in IE9 or FF, only Chrome and Safari (for Windows). Below is the design view of the dropdown navigation: So far, I've gotten it most of the way, but the 2nd level a
  14. What i want to know is how i make the thumbnail bigger while clicking on it simillar to what i have done with the fisheye menu on the top. I cannot get those images to work with the dock JS, any suggestions in how to do it with CSS? This is my page: http://www.wedub4u.com/ Let me know your suggestions.
  15. Does an experienced webmaster know which style sheet is best?Note that the image bg.bmp is just a white rectangle with a width of 1000 pixels. So in both cases a white text area of 1000 pixels wide on a gray or silver background will be created. So far, I always use the method with the image but i.m.o.the other way is more straight forward (and therefore less vulnerable?).CSS 1: html { background: #808080 url("images/bg.bmp") repeat-y top center;}body { margin:0 auto;} CSS 2: html { background: #808080;}body { margin:0 auto; background: #ffffff; width:1000px;}

    I broke my homepage

I have tried everything to fix it and the only thing that will work is if I remove the javascript from the right sidebar. Does anyone have any idea how i can fix this? You can go here to see how it looks now. Below is how I want my home page left sidebar to look. Thanks!
  18. Hellos! I'm having a problem with a border: What I want to do, is to create a line between my site title and my header image. It would be a bottom border for the title. I want to use an image instead of the normal lines, that you normally use. The image is a sort of a chain which I want to span through whole page. What I've tried out so far is:border-bottom: url("/mywebsite/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/chain.png") no-repeat scroll 0 0 transparent

  21. My page does not view correctly in other web browser than Firefox.I want the page to have a "book/magazine" design, where you flip to the next page in HTML. I managed to get the design i wanted, but when i view my page in other browsers, it does not look like it does in firefox. Here is the page I am talking about -open in Firefox for correct view, and then try safari/chrome/opera. Why is it like this?http://www.ia-stud.h...strate/inn.html Here is the source-code:<html><head><META HTTP-EQUIV="CONTENT-TYPE" CONTENT="text/html; charset=utf-8" /><META NAME="COPYRIGHT" CONTE
  22. I have a div animated by incremented margin-left when the user clicks a button. I would like to force the animation to stop at a specific margin-left value and callback a different animation. So if the user tries to click too far it prevents them from doing so. Suggestions? I'd like to do it with margin because it'd be easier to edit later, but if I have to use .position.left as a variable, I'll take the code for that just as well. Here's a wacky selector I tried, to no avail, if it helps convey my intention: $('.slidingDiv[style*=margin-left:80px]').stop().animate(.....); I didn't bind it to
  23. Hi, I'm simply trying to induce a gap between my navigation area and my content area, like this website:http://www.thearteryfoundation.com/ But whenever I try adding padding or margin, my two div's seem to be attached at the hip. HTML: [/s][s]<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">[/s][s]<html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">[/s][s]<head>[/s][s]<title>Metalcore</title>[/s][s]<link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="main.css" /> <!-- Main Paige Styling -->[/s][s]
