I believe it either needs to be request.form("id_map") or request.querystring("id_map"), and you also need a response.write around the string with the img tag.

I'd say the problem is aswell the fact that there is no "end if".<% If Request.Querystring("id_map") = "1" Then Response.Write "<img src='images/spinstar.gif'>" end if %>

If the if/then is all on one line, then you can leave off the end if, and it assumes that the single line is the only thing in the if statement.
