pseudo element :before

Of pseudo-element the w3schools tutorials say :before and :after do not work in IE (which presumably means IE versions up to and including IE6). So you'd need to use something else (assuming you wish your site to work in IE6!).
Actually, this includes IE7 as well.

Shame, sounded to good to be true... Really need to find a way to create some white space before my nested list (and have all boxes the same dimensions). Applied margin-top:10px and and and, but does not do the job (still on issue under http://www.jalp.co.uk/sidebar/V3/navBarV1.htm)......Kurt
You should be able to create all the white space you need with margin and/or padding. It seems to me that the problem is the way the styles are swapped around, making it difficult to identify what styles to set on what elements in the first place! Especially with the nested dynamic ul/li arrangement. The menu javascript seems quite complicated but maybe someone else is familiar with this approach?

Alter the margins of the nav ul:
	#nav ul{		list-style-type:none;		margin: 5px 0px 0px 0px;		padding:0px;		border:none;		width:120px;	}

It looks brilliant in IE (page still under http://www.jalp.co.uk/sidebar/V3/navBarV1.htm). Any other browser (FF, Opera, Netscape, Safari) does not show the white space...(???). This is probably the first time I encounter IE working for my cause:-) Is there a way to achieve the same at least for FF?Kurt
