Hi I'm looking for a critique on the website i've been developing for a while now. At this stage a complete new design isn't really an option, but if you can see any small areas that could be impoved please let me know. Also if anyone has a look for any exploits could you PM me with them.www.minimerc.co.ukCheers, Adam

As far as I'm concerned, I say that it's a quite good job !However, I may have replaced the link area pictures by a url text. But, it's just an opinion. If you are interested by the semantic, I think that :

<div class="content"> <div class="contentTitle">Links</div><br /> <div class="link"><a href="http://groups.msn.com/MercedesBenzDiecastmodels"><img src="images/links/ilsm.jpg" alt="International List of Scale Models" /></a></div><div class="link"><a href="http://www.mercsearch.co.uk"><img src="images/links/mercsearch.gif" alt="Find all Mercedes or related products from one site" /></a></div></div>

should be :

 <div class="content"><h1>Links</h1> <ul (class="link" ?)><li><a href="http://groups.msn.com/MercedesBenzDiecastmodels"><img src="images/links/ilsm.jpg" alt="International List of Scale Models" /></a></li><li><a href="http://www.mercsearch.co.uk"><img src="images/links/mercsearch.gif" alt="Find all Mercedes or related products from one site" /></a></li></ul></div>

Side note: I wrote <h1>, because your page doesn't have another title, if not I must have used <h2> or <h3>.

I tend to only respond to good sites that need minimal work to get them dialed in nicely. I just don't have the time to rip into all the things wrong with horrible coded and designed sites and then justify all the replies. Having said that and cutting to the chase, your site is decent. Its nothing spectacular but that doesn't mean it can be successful. Here is my list of observations:

  • header graphic takes up a little too much vertical real estate OR just doesn't communicate enough.
  • if you are going to a left column, then the images in the body should be aligned on the right to balance the page. right now, the left side is crowded and is more visually distracting than stimulating.
  • there isn't enough separation on the left side - experiment with a background color for your left column - separate the block of stuff
  • I think your left column should be on the right side - putting more emphasis on the body of the site - if this is done then the keep the images on the left (they just need to be opposite the column)
  • Your still in the early stages of developing your content, so there isn't much to really comment on there until you are finalized - but I'd beef it up a little and integrate you keywords accordingly.

Good Luck.

Cheers for reply.I've made some changes to the look and structure of the site based on what you said. It does look a lot more balanced now and i think the side part doesn't distract you so much any more. What do you think so far?Cheers for your response, adam

I think the website is pretty professional but then again it doesn't take much to look professional to me. I have been pretty terrible at site designs but I think it is fun anyway. the way you did the graphic on top with the lines fading out is nice, teach me that trick please :)also you know how to do a shopping cart and have people place orders, how much would you charge me to teach me to sell items online? :)

Creating an applicaiton to store products (i.e. the cart itself) is not that much of a problem. A cookie can do it.The problem is collecting and processing credit card information for online shopping. Something which is not supported on that site if you look on the shopping cart page:
Once you submit your order, we will contact you via email or telephone to arrange payment. Please note that currently, we do not accept payments online.
I'm not sure how the story goes for online payments either.

At the moment you can't pay straight away (at the request of the owner) but soon it will be upgraded to paypal payment. At the moment the order form saves the orders to a database and then the owner contacts them using the details they provide. It's done this way so he can control the amount of orders due to stock levels and such.. plus it's a second business....so as boen_robot says it's just really saving the data, for now.Adam
