I saw on w3schools that people use them for site description and search engines. Would it be safe to say that meta helps in search engines or can you go without them?
I hear from many sources that keyword and description meta tags are a thing of the past. However, some say that SEO tends to change from time to time.As always, good content is vitally important for SEO which is the primary objective along with proper use of title tags, h tags, etc. So should you NO longer use meta tags? I'd say it wouldn't hurt to use them but do a search on the internet about meta tags because you will find good info about how to use them correctly. Here's a good source to get your started: META TAGS

Google is the only site that doesn't place as much emphasis on it. Its technology has been able to get more out of the actual content of a given page. However, it does still use it to create more accurate results. For instance, if you use the same keyword and description on all your pages (for whatever reason) then google is not going to necessairly penalize you but it won't at all help you. However, if you do have specific keywords and descriptions for each of your pages, then google will appreciate that. All in all, you should still use them, but it is more important even now-a-days to use them correctly. Make sure your keywords and page descriptions are specific to the content on each page - they should be unique. Compliment that practice with a sitemap.xml file and you're site will have a good SEO foundation.

As I understand it the search engines generally don't use meta keywords so much anymore due to abuse by spammers and such. There are certain ways to write your content so you will get higher rank in the se's. For example, use keywords in your page title, within header tags, within the first paragraph of the actual content, and again in the last paragraph. Also use them in your image alt tags and in links, etc. Just don't overdo it as that could be overkill depending on the search engine. Make it all relevant and you will gain a higher rank. Just don't use spamming techniques like making the color of your text the same as your background just to add more keywords. If they catch on to you doing that sort of thing they'll kill your page.Another way to rank your page higher is to pay the search engines. With paid links you can of course get high ranks, but it can cost you, especially if you have a pay-per-click deal.
