In XHTML all the tags have to have a closing and ending, there must be no empty tags and everything must be in lower case (Except the website content).

What makes strict HTML 4.0 and XHTML code leaner than transitional HTML and XHTML?
Transitional code still permits old-fashioned presentational attributes inside HTML tags. I mean things like height, width, bgcolor, and also presentational tags like <font> and <center>.In strict mode, all these things must be handled in CSS. The total amount of code for a page may actually stay the same, or even increase. The real idea is to separate the content from the style. A result of doing this is that the HTML sections generally are much leaner, which also makes them easier to understand.
