skaterdav85
are there any pitfalls for using odbc commands with mysql versus using mysql commands? Does php have commands specific to other databases or just mysql?
justsomeguy
PHP also has libraries for MS SQL Server, Postgres, and a few others. It's probably better to use the mysql extension, I'm sure that's optimized more for MySQL than the ODBC library is.
skaterdav85
oh ok, so odbc in php is more for databases that dont have specific commands like access im guessing.
justsomeguy
That's right. This is the list of database extensions if you're interested:http://www.php.net/manual/en/refs.database.php
Synook
ODBC is just an abstraction layer, so you aren't interacting directly with the database. This can, for example, improve portability.Access has its own dialect of SQL.
