The Future Of Flash

Anyone who reads Slashdot is probably already aware, but this is the coolest thing I've seen in a while: an open-source Flash player written entirely in Javascript, without requiring any plugins. The SWF format is open, but I didn't think the first thing we'd see from that would be a nearly-complete Flash player done in Javascript. Here are the demos of Gordon:http://paulirish.com/work/gordon/demos/Here's the browser support page, note the demos don't work in Opera and he hasn't tested with IE:http://wiki.github.com/tobeytailor/gordon/...r-support-tableAnd here's a writeup about it:http://apcmag.com/Content.aspx?id=5078In several years, as SVG support grows, we should see things like this get a lot of use.

Yeah, clearly this project is in a very early state. I doubt we'll ever see support for IE7 though, as Gordon requires SVG support, which IE doesn't have. IE requires a plugin to view SVG content. It would be nice if Microsoft made sure that IE was not the only major browser without SVG support, but I guess they've got better things to do.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scalable_Vect...ternet_Explorer

Whoa! I never knew that was possible, awesome idea though! It doesn't look like it will work to the extent of games, but menus, animations, and small apps on the iPhone look promising! A problem I am seeing is it takes a long time to load the SVG... I have a feeling that will be a big problem for more complex SWFs. I decided to rip it so I could test some other SWF files, as it doesn't load external files(JS won't do that):http://clonedrone.com/flash4iphone/
