boen_robot Posted March 14, 2010 Share Posted March 14, 2010 It's best to instead allow/disallow certain executables to open up whatever ports they need, when they need, and keep the firewall "silent" whenever the programs are not running and/or they are not using a certain port. This allows you (or the program itself) to potentially change the port being used, while still keeping you as secure as possible.The Windows Firewall has this feature built in. It's very likely the firewall you use to also have this feature. If an attacker tries to attack you while a vulnerable program is not running, he'll have a harder time figuring out if you even have that vulnerable program installed.
