how can i tell if something was red or not

hey guys, im trying to add a little more style to this so called email function, and i want to display if the email was readed or not how can i go about doing so?

There is several ways but none of them are accurate. you can use img tag which will point to a php file which. everytime the email will be opened it will send a request to it. also you can use iframe. but problem is most of email client block those for same reason.

ok, ill tell you guys what im doing, i created a so called cms where i reply to emails within the cms and i would like all the contact messages i read to go from gray to red
