Things like MySQL, MariaDB, or PostgreSQL are better data stores for mission-critical data. Things like memcached or redis are great for things like showing analytics or stats to users, or things like that, things that get accessed or updated frequently but are not mission critical. Often they both have a place on the same site, for different things. I would never build a large application and only use MongoDB or memcached or redis though, at least not if I cared about the data.
