Why does the w3school tutorial seem to suggest reversing the order of the arguments?

 

border: 1px solid red;

 

outline: red solid 1px;

I don't see that order suggested here...

I don't think it's trying to suggest that. The arguments can be put in any order, so they just happened to put it in a different order than their border example.

Well it the outline page says says...

 

"The properties that can be set, are (in order): outline-color, outline-style, outline-width."

 

and the border page says...

 

"The properties that can be set, are (in order): border-width, border-style, and border-color."

 

...but neither page bothers to say that the order is arbitrary in all browsers.

Hmm, that can be misleading. But I think when they say "(in order)" they mean that the property names are in the same order as the example is.
