I just read http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.6/en/numeric-type-attributes.html this article here.

 

I clearly states that the display width of a column is optional.

 

Nonetheless,I have used it in all the numeric type cols of my database.

 

In the article is says that it is used to pad the number with space and the question is where this might be useful.
