Kcarson
I thought this would be a good topic, especially for those new (including myself) and even those who have been doing this a while, so that all could see what good HTML editors are out there.I figure, if everybody listed off the following it would be very helpful:NamePricePlatform it is hosted on (e.g. Windows, Linux, Mac, all of above)DescriptionThis is based on a topic where I saw a fellow member using Wordpad to write HTML, I thought it would have been very useful to point them to a topic where they could find the one that fit them best.So have fun everybody, I am looking forward to seeing what all is out there. Kcarson
For starters:Name: NvuPrice: FreePlatform: Windows and Linux (at least that I know of)Site: www.nvu.comDescription: A WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get editor. It makes it very easy to create a very basic website without much knowledge of any HTML. However, it does create some ugly code at times and encourages inefficient HTML. Overall though I would say it is great for a beginner who is just wanting to get something started without worrying too much about the code at the time. Highlith lots of language (like NotePad2). Champion_Munch
I use the greatest HTML editor of all time:Notepad. :)Anything else is just cheating...with regards
Paim
No its not. I can code a site in Notepad if I want, but syntax highlighting is excellent to spot errors, such as if you see your entire code in one colour, you can see somethings wrong (maybe you missed an ending brace or something). Plus, im betting you cant remember an entire doctype and meta tag information, plus charset and type it out perfectly without copy/pasting off another site or file. So, if you say im cheating, then so are you

Champion_Munch
I don't memorise doctypes, but WYSIWYG proggies are just cheating. :)with regards
MadPotato
none of the proggies up there aew WYSIWYG, they're only text editors with syntax highlight
Paim
Yep, and anyways, most WYSIWYG editors come with a code view. It doesn't matter the method its made in, the final product is the thing to judge by. Im yet to see proof of how its 'cheating'.
Kcarson
Yeah, the WYSIWYG editors are cheating to some extent, but when you haven't touched HTML in a long time, it's a great way to see the HTML in action, and reacquainted with the syntax. Plus it is kind of one of those things, its sometimes easier to understand code when you can see how it is used. I personally think they are great for beginners if they actually take the time to understand what the editor is doing.

There is no substitute for seeing your code change color and/or highlight. Without it, you're eyes are tortured looking at b/w code searching for particular peices of code.Plus: I am a Cold Fusion developer so the additional integration elements makes it very nice. Champion_Munch
I personally think they are great for beginners if they actually take the time to understand what the editor is doing. Unfortunately alot of people don't, and their site looks like a mess in other browsers because the code they automatically implement is dodgy.Syntax highlighting I still reckon is cheating, I'd rather do it manually. :)PS. I don't judge a site by how it is made either.with regards

Skemcin
Syntax highlighting I still reckon is cheating, I'd rather do it manually. I'm curious as to how you justify this as "cheating". I'm writing in the code, I only see code, and all I know is code. I have NO idea how to even use the WYSIWYG.I clicked the "quote" button to post this - did I cheat? Should I have typed all that manually?

ajmsake
Here's two that I've come across that has been really helpful... Of the two below I really love using WeBuilder... has everything that the later has but a lot more for almost half the price... the editor is great when editing .php, and .js. Another nice feature of both is in their Inspector you can select which version of CSS to use... Level 1, 2, 2.1, mobile profile 1.0, or you select a specific brower. At the bottom of each as you select a property to edit it will tell you what browser will support it...Name : Bluementals Software WeBuilder 2006 (http://www.blumentals.com/ or http://www.blumentals.com/webuilder/)Price : $49.85 - I think this is a sale price, I forgot how much I actually paid but it was well worth it...Platform : WindowsDescription : "...features allow you to create and edit HTML, CSS, JavaScript, VBScript, PHP, ASP, SSI, Perl code ... ". I've been using this one for almost 6 months now, it's helped to learn HTML & CSS, has a nice Inspector so remembering tags and such is easier, has a code library for storing and reusing code, Code Explorer, built in support for W3C HTML Validator, HTML Tidy, Spell Checker, Code Completion, and a whole lot more. The FTP functionality works great for publishing/distributing the website/pages...The other...Name : NewsGator TopStyle v3.12 (http://www.newsgator.com/ or http://www.newsgator.com/NGOLProduct.aspx?ProdID=TopStyle)Price : $79.95Platform : WindowsDescription : "... written by the creator of HomeSite, the world famous HTML-editor.
