Combine the manual and automatic slideshow script into one script

Recommended Posts

From W3.CSS Slideshow webpage: http://www.w3schools.com/w3css/w3css_slideshow.asp.

Is there a way where I can utilize both the manual and automatic script within a single slideshow?

I want the slideshow to move automatically as well as have the capability to change the slides manually.

Thanks you for your assistance.

var slideIndex = 1;
showDivs(slideIndex);

function plusDivs(n) {
showDivs(slideIndex += n);
}

function showDivs(n) {
var i;
var x = document.getElementsByClassName("mySlides");
if (n > x.length) {slideIndex = 1}
if (n < 1) {slideIndex = x.length} ;
for (i = 0; i < x.length; i++) {
x.style.display =
"none";
}
x[slideIndex-
1].style.display = "block";
}

var slideIndex = 0;
carousel();

function carousel() {
var i;
var x = document.getElementsByClassName("mySlides");
for (i = 0; i < x.length; i++) {
x.style.display =
"none";
}
slideIndex++;
if (slideIndex > x.length) {slideIndex = 1}
x[slideIndex-
1].style.display = "block";
setTimeout(carousel,
2000); // Change image every 2 seconds
}

Well, this gets confusing because I don't know what you are using for html. In the slideshow here...

http://www.w3schools.com/howto/howto_js_slideshow.asp

With the html from the link above -- the following code works both manually and automatic...

'use strict';
var slideIndex = 1;

function plusSlides(n) {
  showSlides(slideIndex += n);
}

function currentSlide(n) {
  showSlides(slideIndex = n);
}

function showSlides(n) {
  //alert('showslides('+ n +')\nslideIndex='+slideIndex);
  var i;
  var slides = document.getElementsByClassName("mySlides");
  var dots = document.getElementsByClassName("dot");
  if (n==undefined){n = ++slideIndex}
  if (n > slides.length) {slideIndex = 1}
  if (n < 1) {slideIndex = slides.length}
  for (i = 0; i < slides.length; i++) {
      slides[i].style.display = "none";
  }
  for (i = 0; i < dots.length; i++) {
      dots[i].className = dots[i].className.replace(" active", "");
  }
  slides[slideIndex-1].style.display = "block";
  dots[slideIndex-1].className += " active";

  setTimeout(showSlides, 5000); // Change image every 5 seconds
}

davej,

When the page is initially rendered all of the images are visible, until I click on the arrow to change the image. However when the page is on one image it does not render to the next image. The displayed image continues to fade in and out, not changing to the next imagine.

What am I missing or overlooking?

Thanks!

Hello, dsonesuk! I'm using your code and i'm trying to add a link on every slide using this code but it makes the text show in every image

<div class="w3-display-bottomleft w3-large w3-container w3-padding-16 w3-black">

Trolltunga, Norway
</div>

That is done differently there is a surrounding container div around every image with class .'mySlides' which originally was applied to only the images themselves, and within this surrounding parent div container element the caption is placed within it. The 'mySlides' class is targeted to control slide action, so the caption div will appear individually within each individual parent div container with class 'mySlides' when set to display.

Why? Its more complicated, background-images parent element can't determine size of background-images to accommodate them, you would have identify that beforehand. You would have to apply each image as css background-image each time manually for each parent container unless you can use server side to read images from specific folder and do this dynamically.
