Yes, it's way easier that way because different resolutions will fit the screen differently.
I generally like using % widths for sites as it prevents problems with spare space vs not viewable in smaller browsers. Saying that I'm tearing my hair out over a site at the moment that drops my main content below the left navigation every time I resize to 800 x 600 to test and it's driving me bonkers. :) The really annoying thing is I've done it before and it worked perfectly - all I changed was the navigation but I can't really work out how that's affecting it as I've set a width for it the same as before. Grrr. God bless flexible websites. *grin*
