Strictly speaking, Dreamwaver is not an API at all. It's more of an IDE.

The thing I hate about Notepad and Wordpad is they don't have automatic tabs - so if you are indented ten times on one line the next line will still begin entirely to the left margin. :)

Plus there's no syntax highlighting, no matching braces, no tabbed interface, no projects, no code templates, etc etc etc. If you get some code like this and you want to find out which bracket or paren matches one of the ones at the end, what do you do, count backwards? Don't you have better things to do? Ctrl-M jumps straight there for me, or if I place the cursor next to one it will highlight the matching one.

  Ext.getCmp("lms_top_toolbar").add(	"->","-",	"Logged in as " + this.get_user_data("fullname") + " (" + this.get_user_data("username") + ")","-",	{	  text: "Log Out",	  id: "logout_button",	  scope: this,	  handler: function()	  {		Ext.Msg.show({		  title: "Confirm",		  msg: "Are you sure you want to log out?",		  icon: Ext.Msg.QUESTION,		  buttons: Ext.Msg.YESNO,		  animEl: "logout_button",		  closable: false,		  fn: function (btn, txt)		  {			if (btn == "yes")			{			  ajax_con.request({				params: {page_mode: "logout"},				callback: function (options, success, response)				{				  wait_box.hide();				  if (success && response.status == 200)				  {					window.location.href = "index.php";				  }				  else				  {					Ext.Msg.show({					  title: "Warning",					  msg: "Communication with the server failed, please try again.  " + response.status + ": " + response.statusText,					  buttons: Ext.Msg.OK,					  icon: Ext.Msg.WARNING					});				  }				}			  });			  wait_box = Ext.Msg.wait("Logging Out...");			}		  }		});	  }	}  );

I'm done trying to talk people into ditching Notepad though, if you want to waste your time go right ahead.

text editor that has Live Preview
That's a contradiction, isn't it?Anyway, one that I think will suit your preferences is NVU / KompoZer (not actually part of the KDE, don't know why they called it that).http://www.kompozer.net/

If it wasn't of Dreamweaver I probably wouldn't be as far as I am right now. When I first began with HTML in design mode, the program help me a lot to understand how a page should be structured and how to write the code properly. I've looked through the web to find tutorials but I had hard time to understand the whole thing (I learn faster by doing it than reading some explanation about a tag meaning...). Now that I know how to code most of my stuff (we are always learning), I'm always in code mode using the auto-completion to go a little bit faster, text coloration and indent to spot my statement, variables and debug quicker.
Yeah! the same happen to me.I'm using DWCS3 and it's great, has a great support and a forum too :) . Unfortunatelly DW it's not free :)

Most of the time I spend it in code view actually. Though I also use split view when I want to go to a specific area or if it’s a large list or a dropdown menu I save typing time that way. I think it’s faster! :)

I have been using Amiasoft Site-Aid, it used to work great, script editor with a lot of useful features, including the ability to link to up to three browsers fo testing. $29.95. But it only operates under IE guidelines, so it's been driving me nuts - get something looking perfect in the app, then look at it in Firefox, and man! is it broken...If they would develop it to suport Mozilla, it would be a great tool.

Did I mention that my only gripe with Notepad is that it doesn't have auto-indentation? I hate it how you have to tab in multiple times every time you create a new line. GNOME's default text editor is much better (it even has syntax highlighting) :)

The main reason I like SciTE is because so many other free text editors are based on scite and scintilla. Also has any one used Jedit? it's definitely not a lightweight program, but it is one of the only free text editors that i could find that includes multi-line and multi-file string search and replace. Anyone know of any other free editors that do that?

You can use Regular Expressions in PSPad, with the /s modifier you can do multi-line search and replace.

I would have to say HTML-Kit on this one. I occasionally use Notepad and I love Microsoft Visual Web Developer 2008 Express Edition, which is basically a beat down version of Microsoft Expression Web.
