The problem I have with DreamWeaver is that it has so many features, and so it takes extremely long to load, when all I want is the syntax highlighting.

People use VS to edit HTML? Doesn't that seem like a little overkill? That's like pulling out a chainsaw to get rid of a weed.

I'm currently using Notepad, but I'd like something like Dreamweaver, but only for code. I mean... when I write the proprieties for a CSS class/id, I'd like it to go inline, like it does in Dreamweaver. I'd also like a syntax highlight like in Dreamweaver. Do you know any application which meets these requirements? I don't need preview & WYSIWYG, just the code things.

Try HTML-Kit. It highlights, but doesn't recognize if you forget to close the tag etc etc. Plus its small and free and doesnt install anything extra to my knowledge. I use it daily and love it.Visual Web Developer 2008 has great inline features, however it also installs a ton of extra's that I couldnt seem to choose not to install. But as an editor, I love the VWD over anything else so far, as it has such great syntax recognition and assists with whatever DOCTYPe you choose, etc.

Use a WYSIWYG editor, but code by hand. That way you can directly see what your code results in. Once you become better at understanding your code, try using Notepad++

thank alot i downloaded HTML-Kit and its a lil better than Notepad.I like the colors, and good to preview it without opening the bbrowser.

I do my layout on Rapid PHP or Notepad++ but I prefer old fashion notepad for simple layout.

Weeeeeeeeeell,for what it's worth, I started on Notepad, for about 3 days. Then I got into Notepad++, which was fantastic, but I didn't feel like it helped you keep your eye on a project. So then I checked out PSPad and that's been my main editor for nearly a year - good project navigation, highlighting etc. I just wish it had code folding! So, having read this thread, I'm going to try out ConText. Looks to offer much the same as PSPad on first impressions, but perhaps a bit slicker.I had a crack at UltraEdit(sloooooow, too many unnecessary features IMO like Google Search?!), Aptana(Again, really slow), Nvu - not really my cup of tea, Crimson Edit - like Notepad++. Don't like WYSIWYG - just open a browser FGS!!!

I use Vim. Its free, it uses colors and auto indent, and I can get it to install on my work computer! I need an editor for home, work, and my laptop. Dreamweaver would be way to expensive as well as rejected by my work computer. I can get Nvu to install on all the computers, but find it so convoluted for what I do. The text editor seems faster, and I can keep the code cleaner.

I use a combination of editors but when I need to go down and dirty, Notepad ++ can't be bear for simplicity, speeed and cost (FREE).It is much better than notepad alone. One core feature is the Line Numbers listed. It makes coding / diagnosing code issues much easier. Not to mention a KILLER Find / Replace function.

actually it is firstpage, it's Firstpage 2006 from evrsoft (i'm using the 06 version)

You should add Notepad++ to that list.

agreed, Notepad++ is the best editor for anything out there,it's got like 20 some languages you can select fromI use it for everything (c++, java, php, html, everything i code)

I just use notepad because it is nice and simple enough for XHTML, CSS and Javascript as far as my needs go.
