I use Code Genie 3.0 at work. I love it. It's just a text editor, but with coloration. The cool thing is that you can customize the color scheme of the syntax for the various languages. I'm not sure where to get it though. It's installed from our servers.

I agree. Use Notepad to begin with, because it helps you learn the actual coding and helps give you a better understanding of code. Once you get into bigger projects thought use a editor. Just make sure that it offers a design view and a source view.

I recommend against editors with design view. The reason? Even if your page looks good in design view it could look terrible in real browsers. It's best if you download a few browsers and always look at your pages in a real browser. If you don't think that design view is that problematic, count on my word: we've had a lot of people coming here asking why their sites don't work when dreamweaver shows it working correctly.

has anyone used visual studio .net? Im learning how to create asp.net pages, and personally i think Visual Studio is terrible. Maybe I havent learned all the capabilities yet, but DW seems to be way better for auto-completion, allowing a user to select a color in hex in CSS, and adding html tags through the insert menu way faster.

If Dreamweaver did not exist, I would pick Notepad ++ over all of the rest. It is, in my opinion, the runner up of Dreamweaver. It has the colorful text, FTP access, recognition of code, and it has tabs! It can also remember what you type in, in the case that you want to redo or undo something. I trust Notepad++ when AD4 isn't there :)

I clicked other...On PC I use textpad all the way. But since buying a mac I'm finding it harder and harder to want to use windows for anything other than checking that the damn thing works in IE, so I bought coda:Panic - CodaLove it to bits, makes CSS an absolute breeze and has plenty of language highlighting options. Haven't found the debugger much use but the built in ftp is good. Am aware that quite a few of these things appear to be on free software too, but sometimes it feels nice to pay for something you use a lot :)Full list of fun in the editor (which I wish I'd read before, being trying to get blockedit to work for ages) - coda editor toys

I used Notapad for around the first year, then shifted to notepad for about 2 years, then I came in contact with Dreamweaver and started using this tool.Ingolme is actually very correct, specially with Dreamweaver (from when I last used it) it renders things a bit different. But about for 3 or 4 months now I started using Aptana Studios, I just simply LOVE this tool, it's not as heavy as Dreamweaver, does a couple of things a bit more logical than Dreamweaver and has easy options to open browsers, it also gives you previews of your HTML and CSS in both FF and IE, still the 2 most common used browsers.

One of my favorite editors is Expression Web, I've been using 2 for a while, just got 3, from the upgrade pack. I also like the new Aptana Studio, thats pretty useful as well since its crossplatform and works of Ecplise.

Hello fellow web designers!!!I am using CSE HTML Validator Lite at home and in school.Program is like HTML IDE. U have editor ofc, html validator, spell checking, syntax highlightining for HTML, C/C++, Delphi, Java, Perl, SQL, VBScript and more.U can insert tags and choose colors from palette and program will automatically convert it to hex form. And u can see all your work in a browser just with a press on a button. There are many more options which i have not used myself. Ofc, i like the most option to insert DOCTYPE definition which I as a beginner have a hard time remembering. All in all, from my perspective, this is the best software for writing HTML code i have encountered.Pls tell me your thoughts on this program if u have some experience with it.PS: There is paid and Lite version.

Best of luck,Mirko
