Bah.  I say we kick out all the options with 0 votes (has anyone heard of Beaver?) and add ConTEXT 4 times.

Hey now, fire up a copy of DSL and Beaver is your man!Actually it's not so hot but it is better than notepad.

Notepad for sure :)
download PSpad and jouney to the dark side. The dark side is far more powerful. We have syntax hightlights and tools the empire could never imagine. They do not allow young jedi to know this because they feel it will make them give up all hope in mastering the useless notepad. Download PSpad Now or you doom will be a very lame text editor!!!!!!!!!!!! :)

There are lots of stories with dark sides, but since you're obviously talking about starwars (jedi), you should look at the original trilogy again. The empire is the dark side. So basically all the tools the dark side can imagine can be imagined and put to use by the empire. The jedi on the other hand, good guys... :)Empire = Evil.Emperor = Palpatine = Evil.

I downloaded notepad2 it's not that hot and not my personal choice in editors. But if there is an easieness to notepad this has it. Plus synatax highlights. The most important thing about it is it comes in a zip file with two files. An optional registry key and the program ready to run. I put it on my mp3 player and now when I go to school or whatever I can run it off my mp3 player and it is no slower then the built in text editor we get.On the topic of BBcode hey check this

  • Lists are cool to point out a lot of code probs

Ok I noticed the rating for PSpad is way down so Im going to show you what you are missing!

  • Pspad has syntax highlights that you can program to suit your need.
  • PSpad has a built in FTP, file manager, +more
  • Pspad has a nice not in your face interface
  • Pspad has optional wordwrap and indenting

Click here to see a screen shot of this of a kind free editorPS. This is not an advertisment I'm just informing people who use the horrible notepad that there are better editors!

I don't really consider syntax highlighting or auto-indent bells or whistles as much as I think they should be feature #2 (right behind displaying text) of any text editor that a self-respecting programmer would use. You're right about patience though LG, I have zero patience for incompetent software.

Well, I don't know if you'd consider me a 'self-respecting' programmer then :) . I write my ASP.Net code in Notepad (using code behind) and compile everything with a batch file.I have to use Visual Studio at work but for my own stuff I use notepad.I don't care either way about code highlighting, then again I don't always comment my code very much.I won't try to write C++ or C# applications in notepad but for web stuff I do. I had to do so in college and just have continued that way.

Yeah, I used to do all my work in notepad, but it's just so much easier to visualize the structure of code with coloring. When I view someone's source for example, I can use the colors to "see" the page structure and get a good idea quickly about what I'm looking at and where I need to be.I don't even see the code, man, just blonde, brunette, redhead..

You are right...I wouldn't mind having highlighting when writing javascript.I wrote 30 pages of JavaScript in Notepad for our companies CMS to visual create web page templates. I got a headache trying to debug the quirks. So yes I must say highlighting would be good sometimes.Which of these editors just has basic features like highlight, but won't overwrite notepad?

You can smack down ConTEXT when it asks if you want to overwrite notepad. You can also define your own highlighters and things, and it's quick. But of course, there are plenty of others out there too, I think notepad2 or notepad++ adds a few basic things like that.

check out Notepad2 Its notepad with syntax highlighting! Has features like optional word wrap but it is still that notpad interface with only a few menus and buttons. If you like the notepad feel and syntax highlighting this is the bestEdit: I just realized there is an optional tag closer! I wil never code in anything else again!

I'm not sure if someone has already mentioned this, i tried Programmer's notepad or pnotepad.www.pnotepad.orgBut the best i've used is UltraEdit, its got options to select the highlighting based on the 12 different languages. if you are working on PHP, then just set the highlight to PHP. its got jus too many options. but its not free :)

I tried notepad2...the highlighting didn't do as much for me as I thought it would.I make good comments and space my code nicely and found that the highlighting didn't make it any easier to read.oh well I'll stick to notepad.

I have been using Notepad2 for a long time... I used to do it with Notepad (original) and when I got Notepad2 (it was on some computer CD), I began using it and never looked back anymore :) Although it has some errors. It doesn't see <embed> as a real tag, and attribute runat is not a real attribute.Oh well, it is still the best I have (and it is so familiar to me :) )
