Dear W3S friends and supporters, I currently have a problem with a searchbox code. It works perfect on firefox but seems to cause troubles with internet explorer as the page, as soon this code is included, does not work and the browser strikes suddenly. I guess it's generally difficult as it looks like most programs do not really work on the roots but have many layers of making the datas looking good again and to see through such a artifact is really not easy. And one can be sure that really much information gets lost in this way which is somehow similar to "fuzzy electronics" which do no more repeat a real picture but what looks nice and is acceptable for the most. I would not slap them on the head, actually it is the customer who forces to do things which have been not included in the original purposes. I guess its more a not so good way people did after and try to paint all in a way how they like it, but not seeking the roots and understand them. So as you quoted: "Know the foundations of computer science: algorithms, machine architectures, data structures, etc. Don't just blindly copy techniques from application to application. Know what you are doing, ..." A fine looking solution is always possible in a "cheap" way and the most will eat it. *Search* Its good to have such as utf-8 standart today, but I guess its really very important to "force" the providers of content and datas to use it and not to simply format and transform it. So that goes back to the single website and content provider and this would make the web effective without much energy waste accessible, not to speak about the quality and the re-adjustment of a market balance.Programmer would also have more tendency to seek a marked in de-velopment rather then in envelopment (what is called development today). Well it's actually also a great business, but I guess not the most skillful at least._()_

Justsomeguy, I just have finished this phpgig "experiment", short installed another kindly provided software and luckily 100% function with this. So at the "end" I have learned a lot here with you and I owe you more than just normal gratitude, since you really had a lot of patient with me.How ever, now there is a lot to do, to change all pages to the new search as well as all layout and new modifications. I guess here I am more successful as in all this php and mysql stuff.Thanks there are people how can handle and manage this an provide such useful products and its good to know what hard work and understanding is behind all this "easy" just *click* *click* ... metta & mudita

Ok, maybe it is useful to tell what the actual case its. I have changed all HTML-Entity ("....") into Chars. So in the html files there are "only" chars left. The pages have the meta info to be uft-8. In the config.php, I have changes parameter "PHPDIG_ENCODING" into uft-8. If I index one page, after that look at the generated keywords in the database if find only cut words. Special characters are no where included but the word are cutted into pieces as well as I find many "words" consist (include) of numbers. As for the search, it also gives back the same picture and cuts the searchword at the special character. Also wired is, even when I change the characters of the interface pages it self (in the language files) into chars it will show the <?> sighn instead of the character for the parts which are generated by the php variables, which is not the case for the added html parts where every thing is fine displayed. I tried a little on the W3School pages and there is the same phenomena. Ñanamoli</p></body></html> into it, it would return in: "These are ISO-8859-1 characters: � � � �. �anamoli" So I guess it is a layer crosses layer matter, put how to come to the surface and quit the additional layers? Since there are 3 processes: indexing, search and output for the search engine it self and again for the website it self in addition. I am sure it has just do do with a general understanding (not knowing in my case).

Also the hint on installing the Jquery lib files direct on the server, although I do not understand the process fully for now. Does that mean that every visitor calls up the file instead from a third server from "my" server? (of course that issue is a little off-topic) And I guess I have to change the head of the HTML file as well to give the new address on the "own" server (host), is this right?Just tried to look follow the link ajax.googleapis.com and got:"404. Dear W3Schools supporters and W3S friends, just had the thought, that it would be great to provide the service on ones websites to mark a text passage "push" a button and get a pop up with a translation in BBC-code format (a little similar like the code BBC) where you can easy copy the part (including a reference to the origin page and post it in php or SMF forums). Not sure if I put it into the right section here, so sorry if not. Does anybody have an idea or even a solution? Reasons for it are:* to be able to make "quick" and nice posts with good references, inks and pics (for the user)* to provide a standard people should quote your site (incl. copyrights) (for the provider) Not to speak about forum owner, who would get right of remembering user to put references to get no copyright troubles. Maybe it's more about an add on the browser side. Not sure it it is useful manageable on the website it self. For sure a solution Labtec, we have got or host possibility from a not only generous but also thoughtful donor and are able to use a hosting on an eco-server (https://ssl.greensta.de/). Actually it provides nearly everything and the package is about 40€ a year so it is real fair and out of this we really dont like to overuse all this as well it would be nonsense to host on an eco-server and cause here and there indirect trouble by using many external resources which are not so secure and thoughtful. Not to speak about adds... Freedom of remorse is really something very heart lightening and excuses do not help to get around, just the opposite, one would think and speculate... endless. Thanks a lot for the hint anyway! Maybe you hint with an internal php - solution would be possible and at least the "best" way behind doing it by hand, but I guess I have to less understanding for that stuff.

Dear MarkT, nothing is for free and comes form nothing, even the normal consumer is blinded by such and expands his obligations. One has to give things with strings back, direct, indirect, consciously, unconsciously... Be careful! Even it is very complex one is sure have no demands by going the maybe more difficult seeming way. One is always faster by foot as by car. Its just that we usually think that somebody else will pay our personal bills. That is a little speculative and might a heavy burden later on.But as told, thanks for your hint. Thanks for the share dsonesuk, Technical it seem to be exactly what I searched for, but as you have told, it requires the installation of javascript/jquery and I guess many would even block such. I guess it would also cause additional traffic on this http://ajax.googleapis.com/ server. Nevertheless, thanks a lot and I will try how it works and try to understand it.Not sure where and how to put to refer to specific single links in one file. I guess the best way will be to make it manual, 70% I have done already of the 5000 pages what does not mean that it is a lost gift, sure that I will try develop it further.Thanks a lot, dsonesuk!

Dear Justsomehuy, I think the websites are right adjusted: "you might need to use the PHP functions utf8_encode or utf8_decode to get it to output text correctly" Not sure what you mean with that. Would be great if you could give me a hint what and where. As far as I know, all host settings are "utf-8" and as far as I had seen im MySql, the settings are also on "utf-8". Thanks a lot!

Dear Justsomeguy, I thought so as well. I tried this one and it does no more cut the search words into pieces. Before it seemed to be that a word including a special character was cutted. For example the word "können" was replaces to "k" and "nnen" so the "ö" was simply replaced (ignored) now with this code the word seems to stay complet, as I do no more get the message "word to short" but it seems to be replaced with the wrong character code, as the words do not find a match. So now it seems to be replaced like "k?nnen".The "problem" as far as I understand is to find the right replacement. "?" = ? Thanks a lot for your hint MarkT, sure, there are always ways around and currently I don't miss it. It was rather to keep the topic useful for others as well and not only for solving only my "problem". As told, things even they are mentioned as free, are not free. The costs one has to pay back indirectly any way. So that is why I try to get around all additional software even if they could be included in this or that host package.So I try to keep it on the HTML level which is the most used source and simplest on internet I guess.Machines need fuel anyway and not seeing that directly does not mean that such is not used. Its like if you need to cut a little bit of wood and take the high-tech saw and not just use the hand saw next to one.How ever, I am very happy about your care and generous hint.

Thanks a lot for your advice, Lab theoretical I also would think is such a direction, practical I am really not into php and thought of php might be not supported from the host, it would cause additional cost (direct or indirect, nothing is for free). So if you have a hint or trick to get around such a problem, it would be great. Thought of a big content of pages, maybe such is even handle able with a editor trick with a special "replace" function and to make it on the offline side (not "automatically"). While I could fix the display of search results for uft-8 content, I sill have a problem on the imput side and no idea where and how to fix.
