Yes, but is it possible to have the function play without a loop?

After an extensive search of the W3schools databases, I find myself unable to find any method of loading a sound file to play off of the browser, once, through a function.I am attempting to put a short sound byte into my page using the onload and onunload events to trigger functions, but I can't find the proper code to call the files within the functions. Could somebody please help me figure this out, or direct me to somewhere where I could figure it out?
