Using a fixed background and coords

Howdy all, this is my first post and I know most of basic HTML and some more advanced stuff, so please be gentle.I'm taking a web design class in school but the few days it took to go through the w3schools tutorial surpassed the class, so I along with a few other students have been given a separate project. The project is basically designing a giant gallery site for all of the teachers classes, she's designed a bunch of background images for the group to use; she designated me as a pseudo-webmaster as I know the most in the class (including her).So what I want to do is basically make the image a fixed background, which I know how to do, yet when I do that some of the image is cut off in the browser (the image size is 1024 x 768, and the monitors are also set at those settings). I'm not sure how to fix that should I just resize the image or is there something I don't know about. Along with that the images have the buttons incorporated into the image thus I would need to use coords to make them links to the rest of the pages. I know how to perform coords in a basic/small image, yet not a fixed background. To recap I ask how to get the whole image a fixed background to show, and how to perform coords on a fixed background. Is this even possible or do I need to delve into javascript (which I don't know as of yet), CSS would be useless as every page has a different background image, so anything would be helpful. Thanks to everyone in advance!!-Optics
