Truncate

I have a gallery script for pictures, and sometimes the names are too long and get truncated by the smarty engine.I was wondering if it's possible for just those few that get truncated to have a special <span> tag around them.So, is it? Does anybody know? If so how would I go about doing it?Any and All help is appreciated. :]

Find the code that does this, and add if(strlen($val)>number) { echo '<span>'.$val.'</span>'; } else { ... whatever they have ... }
