I noticed recently that nbsp characters get absorbed by the codeblock. This should not happen. 

xxx&nbsp&lt&gt&amp&cent&pound&yen&euro&sect&copy&reg&tradeyyyxxx <>&¢£¥€§©®™yyy

Actually, all named entities are absorbed.Unfortunately, there's nothing we can do about that, since we don't have file level access to the forum's internals, and this is a PHP issue.AFAIK, the only workaround is to encode your "&" into "&".
