Is it possible to have unequal word spacing in a single line?

Is it possible to space out a series of words across a line (using word-spacing) but to have one exception where two words are separated by only a single space?

 

Ie: ONE TWO THREE FOUR FIVE SIX ?

 

I suppose it can be done with multiple nbsp tags but is there a more elegant way?

I believe that if the two words are wrapped in a <span> tag you can target them and change the word spacing specifically for that part of the text.
