If you want to be well known in the web development community you could do research on web development and publish your discoveries on your own site, or you could show a large portfolio of sites done for important companies. I mean, you do know what they call the guy who graduates last from medical school, right? anyway, it's a start, and certainly an accredited degree from an institution would also a lot (more?) as well as having a good portfolio/resume to back it up.
