killboy
Can anyone explain to me the difference between sha1() and md5() function??
justsomeguy
The differences are academic, all you need to know is that MD5 produces a 32-character string and SHA-1 produces a 40-character string. That alone makes SHA-1 more secure.

justsomeguy
Not SHA-1, not anymore. It has a 1 in 263 - 1 chance of being cracked, which is too much for the US gov't. Now they use one of the SHA-2 variants I believe, which don't have any successful attacks as of yet.
