can you style buttons, dropdowns etc?

I don't think the color behind the arrows can be changed, different browsers display drop down boxes differently anyway so you are always going to have a different look for different users.You can use css to change some of the colours and sizes etc, adding an inline style to the select field will make some changes.

style="background-color:brown;"

This code would change the color behind the text in the drop down for example

You can try it, but look at it in as many browsers as you can. Look especially at Mac browsers. Major tweaks to buttons and drop downs drastically changes the appearance, often for the worse.
