Ingolme
It can't be compressed. Most people don't use a full image as a background, they use something small and repeat it across the page.
Caitlin-havener
oohhh. so should I have like a spinning loading symbol or something... I really dont want to change the picture! What about sites like pandora.com where they always have a big image across the page...
jeffman
Since it is a background image covered by a lot of stuff, jpeg artifacts won't be very noticeable.Another thing to consider is your most likely visitors. Will they mostly be people who visit just once, or friends who visit often? Frequent visitors will cache the image and it will pop up immediately. First-timers will have to wait.I think the spinning thing would be more annoying, not less. If it were content, I'd maybe think differently. Caitlin-havener
Do you think 165 kB size for the image is sufficient enough?? Or should it be smaller? havener.me

jeffman
Still big, but maybe doable for a background. Your content pops up right away. That's the main thing.
