babyboomer
I'm looking for a simple hit counter that I can plug into and display on my website. Someone suggested a solution from Google, but that's really more than I'm looking for. I just need something that will display the number of visits to my site. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Ingolme
The problem is that you have to clearly define what you mean by a "hit". Do visits to two different pages add to the same counter? Does the same person refreshing the page 5 times count as 5 hits? Should visits from search engine crawlers count as hits?

None of the above constitute my definition of a "hit." perhaps the word "visit" would be more appropriate. If I give someone a tour of every room in my home, that still constitutes a single visit. I guess that's what I'm looking for. Perhaps a simple solution would not be sufficient to meet my requirements. Ingolme
You can't create a hit counter if you don't know what a hit is. You have to define this first. Once you have a definition, you can build something based on it.
justsomeguy
You'll also need to figure out how you want to distinguish what is a single visitor.
babyboomer
So, I found this site on the Internet. It's just one among many that offer the same service. I plugged the code into my HTML document, and it seemed to behave as advertised... However, I'm wondering about the wisdom of embedding a link to an unsecured URL. justsomeguy
If they don't offer SSL, and the rest of your site is secure, then browsers will show a warning. Some browsers may also block that as a tracker.
