Margin: auto; not available in IE?

so i made most of my website in firefox but then i deicded to test it out in IE and boy their were alot of problems. one i noticed is that IE dosent read the margin: auto; command. Is their another command like this or do i need to redo all this manually

if you have set dimensions (width/height) on the thing you're trying to do it on, it should work.

It should work in IE. I have a site that uses margin: auto; optimized for both IE and FF. What you may need to do is specify the overall body:

body {margin: 0 auto;width: XXXpx;height: XXXpx;}

and then place the rest of your page inside the body using floats.

this is what i put in and it didnt work

margin: 0 auto;width: 650px;height: 1000px;

Im actually trying to center the site using an id. This is the code. Im trying to center it in IE.

no, define the body using margin: auto; then in the html/php document specify the rest of your page within divs that are within the body tags

okay well i put this as my body code and i didnt get any change in IE

 body{margin: auto;width: 650px;height: 1000px;color: #FFFFFF;background-image: url(images/bg.jpg);font-family: Sans-Serif;font-size: small;}

yea that worked but it wasnt exactly the same as margin:auto; in terms of postioning. I just made a left and right margin. This thread is done
