Calling and Organizing table info

I have a database with a table named 'books' That table has many entries detailing title, author, publisher, date published, language, and a small excerpt of the book.What I want to do is call all the entries with title starting with the letter 'a' and show them in the form of links, then those links would show the individual entry in full. I would also like to be able to sort by any of the aforementioned fields. I'd appreciate it if someone would get me started with a script. (Advice and/or relevant links are welcome too!)Thanks!
