I would recommend PHP simply because it is the most popular server-side language in use and has a very large community of people using it. I personally also think it is more powerful and has easier syntax than ASP, but that is a personal opinion.

I wouldn't recommend using ASP. I think it's a dying technology since ASP.NET has come out. As a ASP.NET developer, I would recommend learning .NET (and C#), but only under the stipulation that you already own a copy of Visual Studio (which is wildly expensive). So, barring that, I would definitely recommend PHP.

You can download Visual Web Developer Express for web applications and C# Express for desktop applications for free from the MS site. They are lite versions of VS. Aside from the fact you have 2 seperate applications they can do almost everything VS does. I see no reason to fork out the money unless it is for a large company with many developers.

PHP is actually based on C and is indeed more portable than .Net although some projects like the Mono project are trying to extend .net's portability to Apache and Linux. And now that you can run Windows on a MAC you could probably also run .Net on a mac.

Thanks for the tip. If I ever lose this job, I can keep building .NET stuff. Do you use the Express version(s) yourself?

I do at home, we use VS 2003 and .Net 1.1 at work...pushing for an upgrade :)

yes but i never gonna install windows for just using .net. u have to buy a windows which costs lot. why spend money. u can upgrade ur mac. i love mac.
Thats nice... :) But chances are the person asking the question already has a PC and windows since 95% of the world use windows...so what you are saying only applies to you and not this situation.Plus in an earlier post you said you don't have a mac but a PC so what are you talking about??? If you have Linux you can use Mono (which is free) to run .Net

Years ago when i could only just write HTML (there was a few years ago now) i was asked to help out by a friend of mine who owned a web design company, they were making a new website. He knew i had an interest in building websites, and his company was a microsoft partner, they specialised in ASP technologies. After helping out on the new site i learnt alot about asp and i went on to learn asp and now thats all i use, i dont know php, but the functions it can do seem pretty good, but i feel that anything php can do asp can also do.I dont know whether i would have gone to learn php if it hadn't been for my friends company specialising in asp.I admit i have looked at php a few times, but cant say i have really taken much of an interest in it as i now happily use asp.

Coming from a ASP background I here you. I learned ASP.Net out of necessity because my job required it and now I can look back and see how limited ASP really is. ASP is a good scripting language for basic things.PHP is also a scripting language but it is much more powerful as you can drop down to C level coding to get a performance boost as well as PHP has Object Oreinted capabilities which ASP does not.PHP and ASP.Net are much better than ASP for building large applications, likethis forum for example. They are more efficient and faster.

Well, I am learning aso first last time, and now start learning php. Well, for me both ok, better learn both coz you loose nothing if you learn more, just spend some shopping time other to get more knowlege. some people may think php coz it will cost you less than asp (in term of hosting) hehe :)

  • 2 weeks later...

actually i really feel it depends on the situation that you are inif you want to do a couple of simple projects and never touch programming again, i really reccomend you learn ASp as w3schools can really provide everything you need and you can pick it up really fast :) if you are learning this as a longterm life skill then php is the way to go
