  1. FWIW, I really was trying to be funny. So over the top, I believed, my comments could not be taken seriously. I guess I was mistaken. Skemcin, I apologize publicly. And now I think I'll take a little vacation.
I got the joke at skemcin even without emoticons, but only in light of having just read the other post with the "retinas throb" and "bandwith crisis" being so over-the-top this had to be the same. Especially the "someone hit you with a blue and green towel" part was hilarious. :)But yeah, emoticons go a long way. :)
  2. Does that mean one of you guys will be made redundant? :)
Don't think so, no. Three makes a majority possible in a referendum (whatever the topic might be), two would make a stale-mate never leading to decisions, and one would make a dictatorship, which nobody wants... :)Plus, it's useful to be more than one or two, so that when one moderator goes unactive for a while, such as for instance during exam studying, or while recently having fathered his third son, there's someone to cover the vacuum.
  3. You'd be surprised. Not that it happens here often - it doesn't, especially compared to other forums I've moderated. Early on we had a few hot heads that either left, got banned, or have settled in and realized that no one is perfect and/or that there is always more than on correct and incorrect way to code a page.
Yeah, I never expected this to be a "hot" forum with heated discussions, because let's face it, the topics are not very controversial and we are all just trying to learn here. :)
In any respect, all the active members here are well behaved and well-mannered individuals that only occasionally need a little suggestive guidance.
In short, you guys make our job easy. :)
Thanks for all the kind responses everyone has posted. We started this thread to give members an opportunity to provide the feedback we would need to be the best moderators we could for you.
Hopefully, and seemingly from the positive responses, we have achieved this.
And he is valuable to the community, his name just shows he's humble. :)
Or maybe he just started with that name because he had no expectations either way. Little did he know he would turn out to be more than justsomeguy, but rather one of our most active and helpful members... :(
  4. That was just a bunch of sites. If you go through all my review topics, you will understand I am right.
There's no right or wrong with what comes down to subjective opinion.
You guys up are basically only telling me how bad my forums is
It's not really bad. Nor is it particularly good, however. It's just... bland. Personally all I can do is wish you good luck with getting members, it's really down to the fates, could go very well and could go nowhere. Either way I don't think a webdevelopment forum can be directly bad. But there are a lot, and yours doesn't stand out. How you can improve it and make it stand out I'm not able to say, because I don't know the target you're aiming at, like is there a spesific technology that spearheads the forum, is there a parent developing site with tutorials that the forum is based on (like this, most people come to the forums through w3schools.com).
I'm not going to dig deeper in this useless conversation because it has no value,
Hey, that's your call to make.
but I suggest you to inform an administrator immediately to change the rules so the other people like me (who doesn't got a unique design nor a custom web application) won't have the same issue when asking for a review.
We ARE critiquing it, but you just don't want to hear the answer. Uniqueness and innovativeness is what marks the web, and on a broader level the entire economic system and society/culture. Sorry, but that's how it works, and that's what people have been telling you so far, that the forum is ok, but there's nothing really making the forum stand out. This forum for instance can almost afford to be bland, because it has a solid basis in the tutorials site w3schools.com, and thus there's a lot of experienced webdevelopers and good help to be gotten. That again attracts more people.
I don't expect any answer but you should really change the rules, maybe try something like this:"People with bad sites may not post in this forum."
    Why shouldn't they be allowed?
  5. Yeah, me neither. I guess it's all about what your host supports.I'm not sure how subforums go. But I guess a subforum would be a good enough idea. Still, I believe a single forum would be best.
A subforum looks just like a regular forum. The difference is that you make the superordinate forum functions as a category. Like, have you ever clicked on one of the category names?Server Scripting Categoryhttp://w3schools.invisionzone.com/index.php?showforum=31
  6. Sounds too odd for my kind of taste, but then again, whoever is crazy enough to use Perl will be careful enough to read the fine print.
:) What fine print is there to read really? You can only post in either the Perl forum we set up, or the Python (or whatever may come after, like Ruby?) forum. Not very complicated really. Pick CGI forum, and then pick spesific language forum.Don't see why people stick to CGI personally if it is true that it's so much slower than today's languages.
  7. I don't. It doesn't seem like we need that kind of separation. A single CGI forum that includes Perl and Python might be best for starters. If both languages go off to a good start, they could be separated later.
How about a CGI forum under the category Server Scripting, with two subforums Perl and Python? I know it will make it easier to find the threads particularly for Perl/Python, and it will save us checking and moving threads later on. I think that's the best solution. It would look like this:post-210-1202731189_thumb.png
  8. I don't use Perl personally, but I think there would be no problem with a CGI category with a Perl forum. then the people who do use it can come to this board, contribute and also post in the other forums, and the rest of us could also learn something about technologies we wouldn't normally use. And there is always the minimize button for those who find it gets in their way...
Hmm. A CGI category, I like that...
  9. It finally worked :) I chose ASCII and uploaded the script via FTP, refreshed the page and there it was. As a test I made some changes with my built-in editor, after a refresh the error page appeared. Guess I'm stuck using FTP but it's better than nothing  Thanks for the help guys :)
We'll see about that forum when the other guys chime in.
  10. Not right away, but in time. I'd start with O'Reilly's wonderful pages and then shop around for the best site on regular expressions. Then a primer on perl applied to CGI. It's out there. I've just Googled everything without making bookmarks. Lazy, I guess. I can't imagine other users on this board don't have some they could share. How've you done that in the past? Do a general request and eventually collate the best ones into a pinned resource?Anyway, I'd be happy to get it started.
Well, with the Cold Fusion one, skemcin compiled it, because he's the resident CF'er. I did the JSP one starting from the main site, java.sun.com.So it would be like this:http://www.perl.com/pub/q/documentationhttp://www.perl.com/pub/q/FAQshttp://www.perl.com/pub/q/resourcesand then maybe some good unofficial site. I don't know anything about what's good resources or not, so there you go...
  11. I'm a perl person. Can't say I know everything, and I'm a do-it-yourself fanatic, so I stay away from libraries. But I'll help if I can.biggrin.gifJonas, if you're still reading, I would certainly be up for a perl forum. I know enough (in a CGI context) that I can help out the basically bewildered, so if you want to make sure there's at least one answer-person on board, I can fill that roll.
Could you also compile a post of useful (official and unofficial) resources like in these threads:http://w3schools.invisionzone.com/index.php?showtopic=6706http://w3schools.invisionzone.com/index.php?showtopic=13338?
  12. Well, there are only forums covering the tutorials shown on the website, http://www.w3schools.com
Not true. There's a forum for Cold Fusion and Java/JSP pages, and those are not covered by w3schools. We've discussed it before, whether we should make a CGI forum (Python, Perl, etc.), or several separate forums for each language, and I think we decided on postponing our decision, because there didn't seem need for one. Time to reconsider I guess. If people want a PERL forum, I'm sure we could work that out.
  13. Disregarding these guidelines will prompt a moderator to contact the individual(s) in question and will result in appropriate action.

    • requests must come from the original site's author - if you did not build it then you are not allowed to request feedback.
    • constructive criticism ONLY - posts that contribute nothing and/or otherwise flame will be deleted and the member will be warned.
    • if you are working on behalf of a client, you must ask permission to solicit public feedback, especially if the site is not live or not intended to be accessible to the general public.
    • report threads on other areas of the discussion board that should be moved here.

All in all, please be sure to be mindful and respectful to the effort people have put forth. For those seeking criticism, understand that you are opening yourself up to truthful statements that might be contrary to your personal feelings. In other words, you need to be prepared to be fed to the wolves but also understand that each perspective is based on individual experience (which will very from 1 week to more than a decade).

  14. "GREAT, they do an excellent job."But.. with moderators dou mean also administrators? If yes: I think admins should come here, sometime. Now, for what I can see, this forum seems to be abandoned to himself (mhh, I think 'himself' is not the correct english word! :)).
Correct word would be itself, but the statement is wrong. The forum is not abandoned to itself. The poll is only for moderator performance, not administrator, and was something we set up from the start to reflect on how we were doing. The admin doesn't come here a lot, no, but don't worry, we [the mods] have access to most of the controls we need to manage the board...
  15. Before you ask a question in this forum, you might want to check the following (official) references:************************************************Official resources:JavaServer Pages TechnologyTag LibraryJSP DocumentationFrequently Asked QuestionsLinks to Technical Articles and TipsRecommended booksThird-party resources************************************************Third-party resources:JSPtags.comJSP InsiderThe JSP Resource IndexJavasource.netVisualbuilder JSP tutorial************************************************NOTE: Due to server side technologies currently not available to w3schools hosting services, JSP Tutorials are not offered on w3schools.com until further notice. Any post requesting JSP tutorials will receive no reply and be immediately removed. Also note that because JSP tutorials are not offered on w3schools.com, chances are the member base who knows the language is a small percentage, and so it may take more time than with other languages to have your question answered.

  16. What if our community went and made our own browser? Then we could try and make it as nice for programmers and users as possible. I say it wouldnt be that hard, the hardest by far would be the parsing engine!
Are you serious? We could never compete with Firefox or Opera. I think you're a bit too ambitious boy. :)
  17. I specificially want the areas to be only vertical scrollable, so I used overflow-y :)It did not come to me to specify -x too for compatibility, I will from now on.So, it looks great :)? Would you now want to go back to the .htm version again? :)
Well, I don't really care, as long as the content is readable. The links to your site I'm not going to click anyway, because I can't read or speak dutch. The last design (the .htm files as you say) definetely had something going for them as well, simple tables with colours corresponding to the ones on w3schools.com. Both are great I suppose.
  18. Looks great now. :)Overflow-y: scroll; is pretty much the same as overflow: auto; anyway. Overflow: auto; will only give you scrollbars if they're needed, and will break the content to fit horizontally if possible. Overflow: scroll; will give you both a vertical and horizontal scrollbar. I think there's a possibility that Opera won't work with overflow-y without an overflow-x property as well, and overflow sets them both. When in doubt, use overflow: auto; is what I say. :)
