  1. Computers are not built for doing good or doing bad. They are built for 'doing'.
for doing? lol. :) well, i wont ask you what you are doing with your computer- i might scream! well, right now, this is what i am doing- responding. then in a while i'll be doing something else- try to finish up a project i started a while back.anyway- computers are really cool i think. hey, i'm on it everyday more or less. i use it for both work and play. just that some people's work and play are more in the negative. i guess the only thing one could do is to keep themselves up to date with the latest security updates, viruses and its family and so on. the more u know, the better u'll be able to spot trouble. when u dont know, then u leave urself vulnerable. when a prey knows how the predators looks, from the moment they see them, they flee. but when they dont know, they see them and keep walking and smiling. they might even tell them good morning and shake their hands- and before u know it, they are no more.
  2. And I do want to apologise for addressing Ible-White as he.
:) you are forgiven newbielearner, but just know that next time you wont get away so easily. i'll spank you and put u in the situaton room. :):) (sigh--> now smiling)anyway, nice site. i'm not a pro as u know- i'm picking my pieces, but fast tho.* the header is not very catchy (personally i think i'm sufferring from designing clear n catchy headers- but one day...)* if u r not using the entire page- u can probably make use of a nice border or so in someway to lift the site and bring it out more.* the home page looks the same as all other pages. can u do the homepage a lil different. that's what ur visitors will see first, and if it doesn't catch them right away, u might lose them.* and remember, the net has become the world's largest market (selling n buying). many other persons are out there selling the same things. so said- u gotta seperate ur site from their's. so, a lil elegance and a lil professional touch may do the trick.* i'm not into javascript- so no comments on that.(reminds me of very very first site- which i never shared here. . i did a project selling cars online... hmmm. dont ask if i got any sold. )
  3. I mean, if we're talking about 'technology', it includes water purification, electricity, telephonics, sanitation, medicine, written language, mathematics, robotics, fiberoptics, food processing, farming, astronomy, physics, city infrastructure, aerospace, etc etc etc etc. You seem to be focusing on weapons technology exclusively. Technology is anything that someone has ever devloped to make doing a particular task easier or more efficient. You seem to be focusing strictly on things like weapons technology and pollution. Would society be better off without advanced weapons and pollution? Of course! But technology is so much more than that, it's rediculous to think that since the paper industry is dumping waste into whichever river, or some guy gets in an argument with another guy and shoots him, that all technology we have developed has made us worse off. It's rediculous.
TRUE. very true. technology is very broad. i guess we started out by talking about the computer- then somewhere along the road technolohy seeped in.but the computer? hmmm... one powerful tool. powerful in doing good. yet powerful in doing bad.
  4. Forgive me for being picky and technical.
    :) respect! i love it! :)
... none the less our economy is built up around computers and technology, without it our lives would not be as lavish or enjoyable without it.
i beg to differ. are u saying that only now people have become lavish and has begun to enjoy life? so all those people thousands of years ago were miserable and very unhappy? hmmmmm.... what they did not know did not and could not affect them. they were happy in their own rights. whatever they had back then (even tho it doesnt seem like much to us now) was the world to them. our children (when we get, or when i get-- ok, whatever)-- but our children will be exposed to far greater developments than we have today. and when they look back in history at us- they'll laugh and wonder how we survived. lol. but even if they mock me 20 yrs from now, today, i am happy. :)
As for the pollution that all this technology has caused, is rubbish. the human race are doomed to destroy ourselves one way or another. if we didnt develop technology we'd probably just kill each other with sticks and rocks.
i support that. WE ARE OUR WORST ENEMIES! it's a shame though. so hey, be aware of the man sitting/ standing next 2 you!
  5. Because the members of "our culture" are affecting these problems, they ought to be held responsible. Therefore, it is not a "human" problem. It is a cultural one.
EXACTLY- the "members" of our culture are affecting these problems! and u even said it:"they ought to be held responsible". arent the members humans? i rest my case. :)
You say you can't make people do something they want, but you can change their wants, which is practically the same thing
no. i said u cant make them do anytihng, but u can influence them to do it. its totally different.
You speak of culture as if it should be something concrete, when it is in fact very abstract. Culture is, as you say, made up of norms, customs, traditions, folklore and more. Also religion. Culture is the sum of human history, so whether you think so or not, it does affect us and we are influenced by it despite our own "wish" as it were. Read some philosophy by Hans Georg Gadamer on hermeneutics, spesifically what he says about historisity and tradition. In fact, even the language you use to communicate has been influenced by all of the same things, and so your way of expressing yourself is a result of you having been influenced to some degree or another. There's really no escaping that fact, and so you can't say we "choose" to keep up a certain way of life. Change your religion or adapt to another society, you're still influenced. Free will is ultimately an illusion society has indoctrinated you to believe you have.
thank u. good. all i am saying is that every human belongs to a culture no matter where they are. however, u cannot whole heartedly blame ur culture for all ur choices in life. in the end, it boils down to the fact that we all have a mind of our own. if u grew up in a crime area, u dont have to necessaily follow that path. if u commit a crime, the police doesnt care if ur community was a crime infested place and u were badly influenced. u did the crime, and u must bear the consequences.
I'm sorry, but that's a cop out. We are a violent species. It doesn't come from any supernatural forces, it comes from a very natural force: us. It reminds me of a parable, I think from the Middle East. A scorpion was living in the mountains, and got bored with his surroundings, he wanted to travel. So for days on end he travelled down the mountains, across deserts, across plains, and finally got to a river. He walked up and down it, but couldn't find a way across. Sitting on the bank, he saw a frog. He approached the frog, and asked if he could be carried across the river on the frog's back. The frog said 'No, if I do, you will sting me.' And the scorpion said 'No I won't, if I do we will both die.' So the frog agreed, the scorpion climbed on his back, and off they went. Halfway across, the frog felt a sting in his back. As his muscles stiffen up and he starts to go under, he asks the scorpion why he did it, now that they are both going to die. The scorpion says 'You should have known I would, that's my nature.'
:) very nice illustration. i enjoyed it--> i'll make use of it :) . but oooooops- i dont dig the attachment tho. originally we were not violent people. i still say its sin.
Chuck Norris built a time machine and went back in time to stop the JFK assassination. As Oswald shot, Chuck met all three bullets with his beard, deflecting them. JFK's head exploded out of sheer amazement.
a, b, c, d, e, f, g, h, i, j, k, l, m, n, oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo................ oh my word! were u giving a joke? throw it again let me see if i'll catch the second round. --------------anyway, the root of the thing is: is technology doing/ causing more harm than good? it probably was not intended to do harm, but the reality is that- it keeps harm alive. and come to think about it again, some technology is intended for nothing but harm. nuclear weapons are built specifically to harm. u might argue that it was built to harm the bad people alone.... or to protect the good people, but- it was still make to inflict wound, and 'is' used for such.
  6. maaan... i'm not getting much help with this thing. but anyway i tried context, crimson, pspad, nvu, notepad2. i eliminated context and nvu. i think i'll eliminate crimson. and i think i'll try out more extensively pspad and notepad2. i dont feel like downloading any other to try out- time, time, time- MY time :) but i still wanna know how to set the default or various browsers in pspad to view pages. which editor has such feature besides dreamweaver? anyone?EDIT: I just opened a project i am working on in pspad (all the pages). and i really hate how the tabs are- it's confusing i think.- and the tabls alone take up soo much space. i think it will be difficult to match dreamweaver with all of its features (and i'm not talking about the design view- strictly code view)

  7. Well, then you also can't blame humans, because there are humans that are not members of our culture who do not cause any of these problems. Therefore, it's not a human problem. It's not in our "nature". It's a problem with the people who are members of our culture.OK, I can agree with that! :)
lol. heheheheheee. well, yes there are people who are not members of our culture- but they are members of someone else culture! and every single man, woman and child is a human being. so, unless we have wolves, lions and goats that looks like humans, then its not a human issue. but i dont think there are such (unless they are in the making in a lab somehere- :) ). so- it's a human thing. sit and think about it b4 u respond. whether u are from africa, asia, europe, the caribbean, the u.s.- u are a human. whether u r negroid, mongoloid or caucasoid- u r human. whether ur culture practices the class system or the caste system, its a culture. whether ur culture loves meat, or promotes vegetarianism, it's a culture. and guess what? we all fit into a culture somewhere.and by the way- culture is not only restricted to a country or a community at large. every school has its culture. every home has its culture. every church has its culture. every club of what ever kind has its culture. and who carries on the culture- we humans.lol. :)
    we're predators... it's our nature...
em em em.... maybe u r a predator by nature. NOT me tho. lol.
  8. It is precisely those beliefs, values, and behaviors that are causing the problems. People within a cutlure follow those beliefs, values, and behaviors because they are indoctrinated into it and have not begun to question how their beliefs, values and behaviors are affecting everything around us. Therefore, I believe the majority of the blame belongs to the culture itself, rather than the members of that culture.
lol. but u cannot blame the culture. u must blame those who uphold the culture. so- that goes right back to us--> humans. without people, a culture will die, for there will be no one to carry it on. if you are from a society where young men use a lot of drugs- it does not mean that you have to get hooked on drugs too. u have a mind of your own and is solely responsible for your actions.
  9. Technically, I would say it is not humans, but rather our particular culture which is causing these problems.
one's culture can do no harm by itself. culture is make up of norms, mores, customs, traditions, folklore, etc. It is a set of learned beliefs, values and behaviors shared by the members of a society. and who up keeps these way of life? we humans.always remember that NO one can MAKE you do anything. people can influence you highly, but they cant make u do what u dont wanna do. You can lead a horse to water but you can't make it drink. someone can force you to jump off your balcony, but in the end, you are the one who jumped.
People lived on this planet for millions of years (or thousands, depending on your religious beliefs) without these problems.
problems there were. problems there are. problems there will always be. and where did problems come from? sin. satan. and when will it end? not until Christ returns to this earth again. so all the politicians can campaign for ur votes with the promise of stopping wars and crimes. but..... they are humans just like u and me. lol.
But that's not the fault of technology, it's not the fault of a nuclear weapon for getting developed, it's the fault of the people who developed it.
and not even so much those who created it, but those who use it.
    Technology is always a blessing.
well, not always a blessing. creating new diseases for the sea creatures and killing them off by dumping oil, mud, trash, dirty water, sewage, other toxic wastes, etc into the sea is not a blessing,
  10. It is true that there are new diseases today, but a lot (not all) is based on how we live (smoking , drinking, etc)...it can not all be blamed on technology.
u r right. a lot is based on how we live. and how do we live?we want easy life with things such as microwaves with all that radiation. fast foods such as kfc- i shall not say more. all those chemicals in the vegetables and fruits now. all those preservable foods we now have. the dumbing of oils in the sea- fiiiiiish. unhealthy meats of 2day- chemicals to make them grow fast. all those drugs they make to make the sick better- um, they all have their side effects... and the list goes on.
Why would we want to know why George killed Lennie in Of Mice and Men, and who cares what Animal Farm was symbolic for?
oooohhhhh boy. this lennie story is killing me now- cause i aint know lennie :angry: but i've read and saw animal farm :) -----------------anyway- u cant deny that there is a big correlation between development and crime. the more we develop, the more crime. better medication- more deadly diseases. and oooohhhh- the more security we build to keep our computers safe, the more viruses, trojans, worms. etc..... then on the other side of the coin- the more harder men (and women) try to build a decent life for himself and his family, the more lazy men (and women) we have sitting at the corner of the block doing nothing to help him/herself--> smoking, guns, begging (sigh) u know what- just last night this came up in a discussion at church (yeah, i'm a church girl- :) ) about helping people and one person said that a vagrant said its easier and better to beg, cause u make money faster. and not only faster- but u wind up with more if u know how to begg good. :)
  11. by the way- for those who use pspad and crimson. in dreamweaver u can edit ur browser list and add as many actual browsers as u want to open/ test ur pages on- then choose which one u wanna use each time. is such feature on pspad and crimson? or it just uses ur default? i'm only getting my default (FF) in crimson, and pspad is giving me a pspad thing. if so, how do i do it?

  12. boy oh boy. html (edit:text) editors are like clothes. when u have too much clothes- u are puzzled as to what to wear to dinner. but if u had just one dress/ suit, u would have been dressed a loong time ago. :) i have downloaded and installed context, pspad and crimson. i am kinda leaning towards pspad right now. i actually installed context a few weeks ago before i even read this thread- after seeing it in justsomeguy's signature time after time. but it did not tickle me. i tried it again just now- but..... uuuhhhhh....... sorry justsomeguy! :) i'll look at a couple more tho...

  13. The more technology that is introduced with the promise of making our lives easier and of making tasks take less time to accomplish, the more we are expected to stuff into our days, the more busy we become, the less lesiure time we have.
true, true and more true! it's like in the medical world- the more medicine that is developed, the more deseases we are plagued by, the sicker we become, and the faster we die.
Then there's all of the polution and waste generated because of technology (massive amounts of water to produce electricity, aluminum, silicon; all of the plastic, metal, etc being thrown into the landfills as more and more newer and "better" technology comes out).
yup! and one of them that i can't take anymore is the fuel combustion in the air. but yet, who wanna walk 50 miles when they can drive?
you may be right but think about it. Is technology all bad then? What about early pioneers who worked from sun up to sun down 7 days a week just to hopefully grow enough food to feed their family
well, the truth is that back then there was more collective work rather than individual work. many farms were operated by an entire family- thus, they spent time together while weeding the plants. but how much time can we spend with others while on the computer- programming? lol.
Technology has improved our lives greatly since those days.
that's true. it has improved it - yet demolished it. hhmm... i wonder which is heavier? let me see..... uuuhhh...
But your subconscious is still going to impact your morals and beliefs. It is for that reason that theoretical and philosophical are so important - they help reveal the motivations the control the human mind.
yeah. just as every action in life has a consequence, whether good or bad- every action in life was also motivated or stimulated by an external or internal force- whether consciously or subconsciously. people just dont cry for no reason or laugh for no reason--> well, unless u r crazy. but even the crazy ones has their reason.
I think most of the times, it's curse for those that can't afford to use it and/or own it.
in what way? make them wanna steal or so? or make them feel like a dumbo?
What happens if (when?) some catasrophe befalls our infrastructure and we lose power...
uuhhhh... all programmers scream and go half crazy until it comes back. then when it comes back- we are glued to the pc becuz we wanna make up for lost time- no time for friends nor family. :)
  14. well- that depends on your interpretation and from what angle you are viewing it from. i myself am a family person and is always happy to spend much time with them. so yea, its a blessing in the light that it helps you to spend more time with your family. but that is just one of the 50 million sides. twist the line a little and u might scream. :) and since when "It doesn't matter how it gets done"? if u are strictly talking about programming- well. but for certain other things- it matters a whole lot how it gets done.

  15. uhhhh... not becuase u r having fun at something makes it a blessing. some psychopaths get plenty fun out of killing, but that does not make it right. :) the world use to be real laaaaarge! but now its real smaaaaal! did i hear someone blame the internet for that? :) ohhhh- that was me. lol.em em em... have u ever heard the term: sin is sweet? well, computers might be like that! bitter sweet!
