Even if you do have access to your root directory, I suggest still going with the second method, just to make it absolute. And just to make it more absolute, I implore you to forget about using the relative directory scheme, if only until you know that it works properly without it. In the <head> with the <link>, try and use the exact location that your icon is at. Such as www.my_site.com\my_icon.icon should be in the href attribute.Secondly, post some code man.
